I wonder if someone made a high quality rod links for helis.

Im not talking on plastics or any nylon links head , im talking on aluminum 7075 or 6061T that have the ball inside the link and a bolt throw it to the swashplate or any other parts the links go to.

THANKS

I think you are referring to a heim joint. That would probably require lubrication from time to time. May be good for a 100+ LB RC heli, I'd like to find a 100LB heli though

I am making another type of aircraft and will make custom ball links for it, because it is just as easy, lighter, and stiffer, I will do the following:

Get M 2.5 bolts 16mm long, cut the heads off.
Get 0.09" aluminum tubing and place in a vise
Heat the tubing, place M2.5 bolt (headless) into the heated tube about 8mm w/ JB weld epoxy, should fit in tightly, as it cools it seizes further.

Do the same for the other side, then self tap ball links on each side.

You end up with ball links, twist adjustable with an aluminum center tube.

I believe this will be lighter and stiffer, but the plastic ball link remains the same, not much of an improvement, but easy to make.

What do you think?

I think your going to have to heat the tubing to about 1000 degrees ferenhiet to expand the tubing by .001 inch. Be carefull though, at 1200 degrees, your tubing is going to start melting. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the insight, thermal expansion rates are not my area of expertise. I will be using bolts w/o an unthreaded portion. How about if I just heat it to about 500 deg., and thread the bolts in 8mm. I.E. self tap them in with a little force. Then cut the heads off and de-burr? Also will this contraption hold well w/o an epoxy to help it? I don't think JB weld will do anything other than get in the way at 1000 degrees.

I can also use tubing a little larger, and use no heat, just JB weld and a snug drag fit to get them set in.

I can also try this with brass or another metal.

Thanks,

Eric

HHI sells Heim joints for RC helicopters. I bought some of them about two years ago, and I didn't like them at all. They were relatively sloppy.
