I have a Garmin GPS III+. It's quite old by today's standards and the factory GPS in my vehicle. Take a look at this site for some great information:

Garmin makes a great unit. I use the 2610 on my bike and I know a guy using the new Quest. The 2610 uses flash card memory which allows you to load all of the 1.4gig of detail maps. The quest is limited on memory.

You need to ask yourself what you intend to use it for and how you intend to use it.

They both do that.

Are you looking for the ability to pre-plan a route?
Are you thinking local or cross country?
Do you want to carry it outside the vehicle?
Would you like it to be weather proof?
Are you looking for something to take hiking? (never mind that one)

Yea I would like to plan a route, and hopefully cover most of north america. I don't plan on removing it from the car so it doesn't have to be weather proof. The walk from the car to the flight line is about all the hiking I will be doing with it.

Thanks
Anthony

Seems the Garmin 2720 has replaced my 2610. These are touch screen for zoom and pan as well as having a remote control thats great for hands off operation.

You get the full mapping software on DVD and with that you can pre-plan a route using a variety of preferences such as avoiding major highways. Once you have a trip planned out you get the usb cable to download the route directly into the GPS.

All of our motorcycling vacations are pre-planned so we are never on major roadways unless absolutely necessary. I usually bring the laptop and once we get to our destination I can play around and create day trips.

The GPS was hands down the best piece of gear I've added to the bike. I've seen more out of the way towns and places using it than I ever would have in my life. Even for local day trips I plan out loops and I'm always finding new places and roadways to travel. I'll demonstrate the 2610 to you on Sunday if you're interested.

These toys don't come cheap though! Plan on spending at least $500.00 for a good unit with stand alone mapping software. If you're really interested maybe we can work out a deal for my 2610 then I'll upgrade.

.

Of course I want the latest and greatest so ill pass on the offer. I was looking at them today and a couple must have had pre programmed maps in them. I punched in an address and it mapped it right there for me. Ill take a better look tomorrow.

Thanks

I don't blame you, I'm the same way

Preloaded maps are ok as long as you get the maps on DVD as well. Some of them do not offer this!

The other great feature is the find feature. Hotels, restaurants, gas stations are just a button away!

They are actually. Just not the ones from the "A" squad. A little harder on the eyes.

Don, do the officers really show up for the meetings in orange short-shorts?

Looks like Sunday is shaping up to be a pretty cold day for flying. Temps predicted in the 40's and a stiff breeze. Cold isn't a bad thing, windy and cold is another. Time to break out the Mitt!

Who's planning of flying this Sunday?

I will be out there sunday..hope its not too cold. i got the jr flying really good. Still breaking in the hyper but i'll tell you its hard to try and fly it without loading up the engine. I want to rip the thing around.
Hey don i got a trex se Blinged out. I got from my friend up north. Its all together but i need servos. i might stop by action and pick up some.

A Trex ehhhhh.... Do yourself a favor and get the Hitek HS65HB servos. They have the Karbonite gear sets. Of course that was last seasons servo of choice. Futaba or JR may have introduced something comparable by now.

As far as fuel I'm down to just over two cases so I'll be keeping those. Jason and I are talking about a 16 case bulk purchase. That really brings the price down!

Anyone that wants in on this one would have to pony up the cash up front. I got burned last time when I shelled out almost $900 of my own money after I had a bunch of guys telling me two cases this and two cases that. Tom and Anthony are the only ones the kept their word.

When I was there the other day he was talking just over $16.00 per gallon. I'd get 6 cases for myself so that leaves ten cases that will need to be sold to go for the 16 cases.

$16/gal. is a good price if you're getting 30%. What brand are you getting?
