e-Lite Machines Corona > Need an opinion on this problem with ESC

AS you know, I'm trying a Mega 16/15/3 with 9T pinion in my Corona. I really like the power versus the stock Fusion motor....

I'm trying to run a 3S1P 2100mah 11.1 volt lipo with the Mega and a Quark 33a esc. The Quark will not run more than 4 or 5 minutes....it gets so hot it shuts down. Should I try a higher capacity esc like a Castle Phoenix 45? The quark doesn't seem to be able to handle the juice even though it only takes maybe 1/2 throttle to hover with 4-4 blade grips. Or, should I go to an 8 cell sub C nimh pack instead and forget the lipo ??

I have the same motor as you do, but I use a CC Phoenic 45 Esc and I have not experienced any heat problems so far. It might be that the battery doesnt give/have enough power(Mah)or that the Esc cant get rid of the heat from the bec for the three servos. I have experienced heat problems in a plane I have, and the solution was to install a separate Park Bec directly between the battery and the Esc. Hope this could be of any help to you.

Thanks for the reply iceman,

I think I'll try the CC45 esc....

It's been a while since I have flown a Corona, but is the 4-4 setting the flatter or coarser blade pitch? The flatter blade pitch/smaller pinion is better with higher voltage systems.

A 2100 mAh/3 cell lipo battery should be fine, but the lower headspeed means more current is being drawn, which means more heat is being produced.

Best of luck!

The 4-4 grips are the flatter pitch. Even with that, the headspeed required to hover is only like 1300-1500 RPM. So, you can pretty much fly around with 1/2 throttle...

I'm going to try a 45 amp ESC, I hate to go the BEC route because then I have to find a spot for a receiver battery.

I have a Mega 16/15/3 with 9T pinion in my Corona. I'm running it with a CC45 and 3300 7 cell NiMh batteries. I get about 12 minute flight times. I am also using the BEC that is in the CC45 and have no problems.
I think the 3S1P 2100mah 11.1 volt lipo is being abused in your setup. I think a 3S2P 4200 would be a better choice. Or even better, the 7 or 8 cell Sub C NiMh packs. The corona loves the extra weight.
The CC45 is a fantastic controller, especially with the new heli firmware.

Ah-ha...so the Mega is drawing current faster than the 3s Lipo can keep up with? If I use a battery with larger MAH, such as the 8 Cell NIMH it should be ok ? Or should I also get the 45 amp ESC too so I don't cook the Quark 33 amp ESC ??

Thanks for the input....

Matt

You may not be able to gear the Corona down enough to keep the current consumption down with 3S lipo, unless they make a larger main gear.

Update 8-5-06.....

I've installed a CC Phoenix 45amp esc and picked up an 8 cell 3600mah sub c nimh pack to go with the Mega....test flights in the yard show pretty good power but man that battery is heavy. I may need to go back to the 6-4 blade grips for the lift....I was hovering a lot because there's not enough room in the yard to do FF, and I did get a lot of heat on the motor and esc, so we'll see if I'm getting anywhere...I'll give it a good run tomorrow at the field.....

Are you flying with a canopy on? You may also want to pick up a heat sink for the Mega, such as the blue GWS Heat Sink for Speed 400 Motors.

Yes, I have a canopy, but I cut a hole on the side where the ESC and motor are. It doesn't get that hot when flying FF, especially if I'm running nearly flat out, must be good airflow. I put a heatsink on the MEGA......

After flying today at the field, I'm impressed with the runtime, must be all of 10-12 minutes... maybe more.

I did crash it twice into some tall weeds because I'm not used to the weight of the 8 cell battery, I'm used to flying 6 cells with the brushed motor. I was banking it too much into turns and not hitting the right cyclic fast enough when it started to fall over. I'll get used to it. So far I only chewed some teeth off the main gear, but I have more gears....

That's great ... 10, 12, or more minutes is perfect. You may find that you are actually closer to 13 minutes. Are the batteries in the stock position or underneath with Voyager landing gear? I found that the underslung 8-cells give a different flying property.

I'm running with the battery down in the Voyager Landing gear holder. The CG is so low it's like flying with a bowling ball on the skids. The current canopy I have has mounts that would be in the way of the 8 cell pack on the aluminum crutch. I may try moving the battery up and see if I like the handling any better.....

I'm really liking the power and runtime with this setup....
