Synergy R/C Synergy N9 > synergy problems, now fixed!!!!

it's now 3.10am here (i didn't want to give in)and i have spent 3 hours trying to get the fan/clutch assembly dialed in......to no avail i might add.

i also have the fan mounting problem as noted on litterotors were the front fan casing mount doesn't fit, not a big deal and the dremel will sort that one out. i'm more concerned about this fan and collet alignment however, i can't get it close to good enough. so much for just bolting it on and go.

i'm beggining to wonder if the collets or fan i have is machined properly, anyone else had a problem with this alignment?

to give you an idea, if you bolt the engine in place and leave the top bearing support bolts off for the start shaft and spin the engine, the start shaft top bearing block can be seen to move about 2mm back and forth, i can't get it better than that.

cheers

Do you think it's the collets or the fan? Have you dial indicated the fan at all? That does sound like a lot and certainly not good enough to fly with.

Interesting you had the same problem I did with the fan shroud, are you running a YS?

i don't have a dial indicator hence i spent so long with the fan, thats on the shopping list today!

i'm pretty sure the start shaft is the culprit here, i'll get an update when i've stopped swearing at the sob.

i'm running an OS91 shz hyper.

Check the crank to see if it is bent too if you get an indicator.
It could be bent and the parts are ok.

got indicator, crank is fine, i have video of it, the best i could get it to with 6 thou and it actually went round the guage with the clutch on.

video of clutch, this is after quite a few hours of messing, i thik messingwith it made it worse as the brass was wearing.

video of the whole unit attached for kicks(p.s mind the profanities at the end by me if you can hear it.)

i contacted realraptors and they are sending the replacement parts as we think the collets are the culprit. one is very slightly oversize it seems.

while i'm at it, mention for andy at real raptors, absolutely superb customer service and the rest of the synergy is going together a treat.

cheers

all you have to do is loosen the crank nut and rotate the hub just a little bit, check runout, if not within specs, keep moving it till its dailed, thats all i did, it took me about 10 minutes to do that....also make sure you cleand hte crank shaft, collets and hub with rubbing alcohol. once you got hub dailed, install you clutch and check see how far its out and unscrew clutch and rotated 180 and bolt it back down and recheck, you wanna go with the lower side, i used aluminum foil to dail in the clutch......if you need anything. let me know.

first flight on the machine was solid, and feels great. Pics in my gallery

synery build

had to tinker with the fanhub a little and it got better and worse, finally got it within 3 thousands. i dont think dial indicating the clutch shaft is going to do you any good as it rides in bearings. i indicated only the fan hub without the fan attached. only took about 20 mintues. had to take it off once to clean it but finally got it. the rest is going together really nice. had to dremel the same hole as on little rotors to make the fan alignment correct, once i didnt that it works great and the fan wasnt rubbing anywhere.

you can get the hub almost to 0 and you should check for runout at the tip of the start shaft. but your right, what a easy to build awsome heli. I actually enjoyed building this heli.

there is NO way this fan assembly is right, there is something machined wrongly. this isn't the first fan i have installed and i done exactly the method you used. it's a fault part, no big deal.

If something is machined off and if it is sixty thou off you will be able to see it.

You should see a hole not concentric to the outside of the part.

You can see a lot less than 60 thou error with the nakid eye.

Does anything look machined wrong?

yes, the collet. i didn't need a dial gauge, i used it to see how good i could get it.

all i can say is there is nothing wrong with my hub and clutch system and nothing wrong with Mike scoles, matt botos, and many others i know. I'm not saying your wrong but obviously in most cases it has not been a issue. hope you get it solved because this is a great machine and I'm having fun with it.

update on this one for anyone interested.

after a total of 16 hours the fan is now at 2 thou and start shaft at just over 1 thou. it took a LOT of effort to get it to there. major kudos to AJM on here as he was the one who managed to get it.

before i start i will say i have 2 of everything, 2 set of collets and 2 fan hubs, so i have a good measurement and guage of part consistancy.

here is the important measurements.

OS 91 shz is 7.98mm
both top collets were 8.43mm (the crux of the problem already!)
both bottom collets were same size (can't mind what, the top one is the one that matters here anyway)

the slot in one of my collets isn't even machined and is infact closed, the other one ended up the slot probably 2-3x the original size to get it to clamp properly. this was combined with a 0.13mm shim inside the collet to take the collet to shaft difference up.

this got the fan to about 6 thou, it started at just over 9.

ok, on the gauge, off, on, off etc etc and refitting, turning the fan a million times it was decided to start to mess with the taper of the back collet as the back of the fan was about 5 thou.

so, mark the high spot, take the collet off, sand it with fine wet and dry, try again, mark high spot, sand it, etc etc. after maybe an hour of this the fan was at 2 thou, we called that a victory.

NOW came the start shaft!

it now dialed at about 9 thou. rotate 180 got it to 6.
so, take the start shaft off and san the fan hub where it meets again, again, going slowly (it's easier to take off than put back on). after maybe an hour of this it went to just a tad over 1 thou, we called it a day at that, or by this time a night!

i IMPLORE people to look at their fans, if you haven't gauged them please do yourself a favour and do it. i never dialed a fan that was this difficult before and i've never seen one (or anyone else for that matter) that has needed so much work. i hope they reveiw this collet system in the next batch.

cheers
