Beginners Corner > Blades... 680 vs 700?

What can I expect or what is the difference between a set of 680's and 700's on an Ergo 60? I am a beginner almost into forward flight and want to get a set of V-Blades. Which would be the better choice?

Thanks,
Slider

Slider, I have an Ergo 60 that I have flown with the stock wood 680s, NHP700s, and MS710s. Anything is better than the stock blades (the stock JR blades are crap, IMO). I thought the NHPs flew really nice (until I broke 'em). The MS710s are even a little better. It was amazing the difference in head speed just from bolting the MS710s on. It went up A LOT. I had to readjust all my curves. Anyway, if you're going to spend money on decent blades, I would definitely go for 700s or 710s. Assuming you've got a healthy motor, go for the big ones. I'm running an OS61SXH-WC that's a little tired and it handled them pretty well, I thought.

Advantages/Disadvantages

Thanks for the suggestions, but I still don't understand the physics between longer and shorter blades So far, I understand the bigger blades will result in a higher load on the engine. I am running an OS 61-LX with a brand new Hatori muffler and it is screaming. Also, from what I can remember is that a longer blade will retain more energy for better autos. That is about the extent of my knowledge. What I was wondering is what the advantages are between a set of 680s and 710s and everything in the middle. Are the longer blades more for 3D, FAI, or Autos?

Thanks,
Slider

PS - The woodys are doing fine. I am content with them right now. However, I would like to make a purchase on a new set in the near future to try out

longer blades

Slider, if you're happy with the stock woodies now, you will be ecstatic with some real blades on it. I did not find that putting the longer blades on mine took more engine power. In fact, as I stated earlier, when I first put the MS710's on, I had to reconfigure all my pitch curves because the head speed was sooo much higher. If you're going to invest in a good set of blades I say go for the big ones. They shouldn't be any different in price and will give you a better flying heli. More disc area will give you more responsiveness and control no matter what your flying style. They will definitely auto better, that I can say from experience. As far as FAI & 3D, I can't speak from experience, but I would have to say they would work equally well in either regime. I can tell you my bird was a lot faster with the longer blades. I don't think you'll see different sized blades used in FAI & 3D so much as different style blades. Again, I am not speaking from experience in this area, but I believe the 3D blades are more tuned for inverted flight, but as a consequence have a slight bit more drag than FAI type blades. FAI style are a slightly different airfoil which has less drag and may result in some more speed for large maneauvers, but won't fly quite as nice in inverted maneauvers. Maybe someone else can chime in and add to this topic. Anyway, bottomline, my recommendation is if you're gonna spend the money for some nice blades, go ahead and get the long ones.

700 CF For Me

Wow!!! What a difference between the woodies that I used to run and the CFs that I installed and ran today! Now, I'm not sure who to praise here... I purchased them at the local hobby shop yesterday ( Graves ) and they said that the blades are from MA. The only thing on the box was " Carbon-Fiber Rororblades, Evolution 3D" wieghing in at 180 grams. They came in a plain white box but they are beautiful!!! They fly just as good as they look.
