Thanks for that info. I thought you had the Newall system that allowed you to use the feedback from the linear scales which are basically linear encoders to connect to Mach 2. I can't remember if that was a whole different system from Newall or just an addon box. I will need to look at a Newall product catalogue to be sure. Have you tried Mach 3 yet? It is a really nice version but I still like to use Mach 2 as well.

Steven

$900 is a great price for that mill.

Steven,

I think you did the right thing with the BOSS conversion, less backlash than mine, no ballscrew or motor fitting, and you just can't beat the price of yours over mine. But I do use it alot manually. If I could have found a deal like yours and knew what I know now, I would have jumped on it.

Carl,

Newall does make different reader heads with quadrature output. They are not the same as the heads I need to use with the C80 display and the C80 display can't be used with the Quadrature reader heads. I wanted to use the C80 manually so I went that way. If you need the part number for the quadrature heads, I may have it somewhere.

Rick

I've been working with the new Harbor Freight 8x14" lathe and last night was able to write and execute my first cnc lathe program. It was just a simple taper, but I never get tired of seeing one of my projects or ideas actually work! The lathe bed bolted right to the Bridgeport table with the existing mounting holes, and I connected the quill to the lathe carriage by threading a 1/2" rod into the carriage and grabbing it with a 1/2" collet in the quill.

I've backed away from my idea to use a large stepper entirely as the spindle motor, but instead have mounted a smaller stepper opposite the existing spindle motor for indexing. I'll update my gallery when I get this all together. Also, I plan to play around with a spindle encoder and the software I have to do threading. I've never had much luck with manual lathe threading.

By the way, the Harbor Freight lathe is really nice for the money (#44859; less than $500 delivered). If I had known this was available I would have bought it and a small mill instead of the Smithy machine I have had.

Good idea to move the lathe carriage with the spindle. I was thinking you would hold the tool in the spindle. Post some pics when you get it sorted out. Good work Steven!

I haven't posted in a while as I decided to make 2 PM Research model steam engines to give as Christmas gifts. This tied up my heli hobby time for a few months. I did, however, get to use my cnc lathe setup extensively. As you can imagine, the steam engine models had lots of turned parts. The cnc lathe was invaluable for making the spool valves and pistons, and multi-pass threading on cnc is too cool for words!

The only drawbacks with the lathe-on-the-mill table idea are that it ties up the mill and that it is almost impossible to get a truly accurate setup this way. For short things like heli and steam engine parts the innacuracy is not an issue. But for turning a part with a long span, the workpiece will be tapered. By contrast, I turned a steel test bar between centers with the manual carriage and handwheels and held .0004" over an 8" span.

I think my next project will be to piece together a Hardinge toolroom lathe with CNC controls for a dedicated small and accurate machine that I can run limited production parts on.

I've posted pics of the lathe/Bridgeport setup in My Gallery.
