| Don't know how long it will take for every one to make the change but the US DoD has mandated a change in the terms we used to use for UAVs. In an effort to be more precise, the DoD has changed UAV to UAS. UAS stands for unmanned aircraft systems. The term encompasses the whole system, from the ground station, comms links and aircraft. The term aerial was too generic. If it's flying, then it's an aircraft. The big debate still continues on whethere the aircraft is piloted or operated. Big difference when you start talking about civilian airspace and FAA regulations. With virtually unlimited application both in and out of the military domain, I would be surprised if the term UAV ever gets shaken. |
