I was flying my hawk sport today, pushing it kinda hard, looping it, roling it, stuff like that. the heli was flying REALLY nice, so i go into idle up, and i see that i dont have enough throw. so i turn it up alot. it feels good, but not quick, and i dont want to land it and adjust it manuelly. so im haveing LOTS of fun flipping it, so i try a back flip, i do it very nicely. i didnt have very much negative, but i didnt really care cause i wasnt doing 3-d. so i try 2 backflips, i start at one end of the run way, get going to about 25, pull up, did the first nicely, second one is coming, now im upside down, and only 15 feet from the ground!!! so, i pull all the down on the collective, but wait.......NOT ENOUGH TO BRING IT UP!!! so now im slowly floating towards the ground, so i say to myself, no way, im not crashing! so i pull back, and it comes out, Almost level, just a little bit nose down. so the worst happens, i hit the ground, boucne back into the air!! and one guy says, "O you have, your not going to crash" then all of a sudden, you hear a SNAP, and the tail goes CRAZY!! no more tail control!!! so i try piro flipping it back to right side up.....nope....doesnt happen....it hits the ground...and HOLY SH!T!!!!!!! CHICKEN DANCE!!! my battery was THROWN out of the heli!! so i have no more control!! it is now spinning on its side!!! no blades, flybar is now a U. It started coming at us spinning on the ground!! it hits the fence, stops, and starts digging a hole!! the blades finnally catch enough, so the engine is now slowing down. me and another guy hop over the fence and pull the fuel line out.

It was THE best crash i have had yet!! i was laughing so hard!! it was so funny watching it dance around. it dug about 1 foot into the ground to. i lost a paddle, and one of my paddles have a peice of the flybar in it. There was only about 10 of us that saw it happen. i sure did wish i was at bayside when it happened! the battery switch some how was caught by the head, thats how the battery was thrown out.

My heli looks like a tottal mess now, but o well. it was fun watching it bury itself!

Moral of this story> ALWAYS CHECK YOUR PITCH AND ADJUST ANY THING THAT DOESNT FEEL LIKE WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE!!!!

hehe, ya, to far though. had to show what that club was missing.

I checked my main shaft and it has a HUGE bend in it. my blades are only 3 inches long now.........think i can fly with them?

ill have it ready to fly again next weekend, we will go flying saturday or something............ill make sure i have more negatives though

That sounds like it hurt! Glad you can laugh about it though. I know when I munched my Hawk SE it broke my heart. But when I say munched, I mean MUNCHED! It was a total loss. Nose first into the ground, at about terminal velocity. There was no need for the chicken dance, because when it hit the ground that was all she wrote. Loved that bird, may she rest in peice. Or is it pieces? The world may never know!

Hope you get it back up again soon!

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

ill have it back up before the week is over.

I was laughing cause i didnt really need to worry about the price of the heli......only 160 for a kit.

Im thinking its only going to cost 80 bucks to get her back up again

im still trying to figure out why the tail went out of control. the tail blades are fine, the gears are still fine to. but, the wire driving the tail was rounded at the end, but it should be flat cause a little grub screw(i think thats what it is) holds it on the flat spot, then one on other side witch is round. but wouldnt the tail blades break spinning at 30,000(about..right?) rpm's break? i guess it just had enough force to round out the shaft so the grub screws cant catch. i sure wish the hawk sport had a belt! then i wouldnt of crashed. i crashed because the tail went out.........So, who wants make a belt for the hawk sport????

im surprised, the heli is barley damanged. prety much everything normal is broken, or bent....main shaft, feathing shaft, blades, boom....etc...etc. i mostly lost some links. this is going to be a cheap crash.

I sure wish i had it on tape though. the funny thing about it, that was my warm up run, and right after that i would fill up again, and do some acrobatics, and a guy was going to get it on tape! that would have been my first demo!

There was another guy that had a raptor 30 that was just learning to fly and he said i could use his.......but i was to afraid to crash it.

So ill probably email century about the belt driven tail...you never know, they may do it!

Bearings

Check the bearings for the main mast. They probably have flat spots and should be replaced (after every crash).

More than likely your tail contacted the ground when you bounced and cause the set screw to either back out or shear the end off. Especially if you were trying to power out when you hit. Next time your tail goes crazy hit the throttle hold and auto it will save you every time.

Tail at 30k rpm

I'm quite sure that the tail is far from 30.000 rpm. That is way much, like those engines on F3D planes. A tail at 30k rpm would probably shake like mad if you didn't have perfectly balanced blades (but maybe some major tail response . I have landed on the tail with just a minor dent in one of the blades so it's possible to touch the ground without breaking them.

Hope you can get the heli back in the air asap!

Hey Corey,

Glad you had a blast. I doubt a belt drive would have saved you there. You would have found a way to screw it up too . You'd probably have broken the bell-crank that controls the pitch of the tail in that case .

I think the gear ratio for the tail is around 4.8:1. So if your engine was running at the full nosebleed speed of 18000, your tail would be going at around 3000 rpm.

I think the moral of the story here, is to try your crazy stuff a little bit higher up .

i was just guessing on the tail rotor rpm. i would have been SO happy if i got it on film. it took easily 5 minutes to stop beating itself down. it dug a into the ground with its 5 inch blades ive always wondered what was in fiberglass blades. my main shaft is WAY bent. i may have to cut it to get it out....thats how bent it is.

I did hit throttle hold to, but i said, aaaa hell, ill let it dance around. so.......i took off throttle hold, back into idle up, and all you see is.................BOUNCE.......BOUNCE........i was more mad that i didnt get it on tape, rather than crashing.

I dont know about the caliber 30, ill beat it down to much

Whats a good cheap heli to crash?? and has good flight performance??? im thinking about the raptor 30 v1. just something i dont have to worry about....like the hawk sport!

SO everyone buy a hawk sport and beat the hell out of it! i was afraid of crashing......but now.........not any more!!! the i dont have to worry about it. so i think that makes me that much better......and its one less thing to worry about!

Ill have the parts HOPEFULLY friday, so then i can fly saturday. we'll see.
