As one of the 'outlaw' flyers with shuttlepilot I must state one thing here, as a group of grown men we make our decisions based on knowledge of each other that spans many a year, so when we say you break it you pay for it, that INCLUDES ppl & property... not everyone on the planet is 'sue happy', and seeing as the county has no problem with us out there.... if someone lets a plane or heli get away from them [thru either dumb thumbn or radio failure] doesnt really matter, we just dive under the nearest vehicle if it flys, its welcome... In over 40years noone has been hurt bad, ALL have been hurt more seriouly playn sports or just workn, playn than have been hurt at the flyn field . Yes we still welcome anyone wants help and ask [male or female], EVEN with our lax rules. If you are obveously so stoopid you are a danger, even we wont allow you to fly with us I have, over the years, been in a couple different clubs and know MANY pilots from other clubs and in ALL cases it always boils down to 'club leadrs' and the frkn politics. I never had as much fun and help as I get when 'our gang' gets together and have a fun day of flyn. sure we talk about each other but we do it face to face and have a good laugh, no back biten.... GAWD ! we do it for fun not the approval of others.. but thats just me, and Im funny that way....( SHUT UP shuttlepilot !)

a flying site with no politics sounds nice a flying site with no insurance sounds crazy.i agree with Charge this could hurt all of us.
it only takes one person to sue the land owner and next thing you know they pass a law stopping all of us from flying.if you guys like get some insurace the ama has it for 60 dollars a year once you become a charted club for 30 dollars your total investment 90 dollars and you get 2.5 millon for the land owner.Hope this helps.Tom

Been flying RC for 28 years now, and I'm going to have fields shut down!!! I never thought that I would have so much power. I CARRY HOMEOWNERS...and it's covers the rc stuff!! I guess if I'm flying on my own land, I'll sue myself The only thing that I have noticed that has hurt rc is the "organized" fields with their politics and good ol boys clubs alienating folks to the point where they quit all together. If you are the type of person that would sue someone else for something that is YOUR fault, you wouldn't be flying with me or my friends anyway at our outlaw site. I guess we'll have you sign a piece of paper stating "I won't sue somebody because of something my aircraft did" Geez.......

I fly on county land and my own land. It's according if I fly by myself or with a group of friends. NONE of us are going to sue the county because of something WE did. I can smell fine. Coffee and BS. I'm very sorry that you folks have to be around "sue happy" individuals. I'm from the school of thought that states "if it's your fault, then you are responsible" Pretty simple if you ask me.

Edit: I'm outta this discussion. It's gone way too far off topic and I don't want my comments to "shut down flying sites." It would probably be ok with CHARGE if we had to register our helis with the government like we do with handguns. Maybe we will just have to register them with the AMA

Look guys, at the end of the day, each to thier own... right?

If politics arent your thing, go elsewhere, if your looking for
a friendly atmosphere, spot the individuals and single them out.

If theres not a single person at the field you can get along with,
go elsewhere. I really dont see the point in pissing and moaning
about the things you can change. The choice, after all.. is yours.

I spent 4 hours at a local funfly where not ONE person acknowledged
outside flyers that had come to watch. You were on one side of the
fence or the other, but no in between. There was a very strong
dislike for helis (no big deal) and an even stronger dislike for
outsiders.

Keep in mind, this was a public event where people had been extended
an invitation via the newspaper.
Plenty of playing up to the crowd, but no social interaction. WEIRD!
I still go occasionally and see if anyones keen for a chat, but its not as if im short on space or places to fly.

Youd be lucky to find a half a dozen people in a bar that you could strike up an intellegent conversation with, much less have something in common with. Youll probably get some odd stares for partaking in an ale thats not the local... DO YOU STILL GO TO THE BAR and have a few "quiets" ... yeah, thought so!

you guys and gals are welcome to come to our club field and fly heli's.
I am the vice pres and every one in our club flys heli's, we also fly some planks once in a while. "Fort Ogden Flyers" Foxden is the president of this club, Dues are $20 per year and we have one club meeting a year to elect officers to validate our ama club status. no rules, just common sense, and follow the ama safety code.

with that said, i also belong to a club where we fly heli's up to a month ago and two non-flyers put forth a motion at a club meeting to not allow heli flying except in a 10'x10' area. What a crock!

I'm waiting for the FunFly we are putting on at that club field this weekend for heli's to see what happens with that rule, (it passed). It looks like 150 heli pilots or more, yea!!

Emile is a gentleman and projects himself very well, i always stop at Dothan and get fuel just to talk with him, i'll see him this weekend at the Port Charlotte FF i'm sure,

Please cancel my clearance, I have the field in sight.

i get hassled sometimes but thats probably because im 14 and most people think im too young to fly - they usually leave when i start the 90 up

There is a local club field where I live and I wont mention names (East Bay RC Club in Livermore) that has a reputation for being hostile to the heli guys. EVERY time one of the heli guys goes up, one of the older guys and usually a club official ALWAYS comes over to where the heli guys are and makes some kind of complaint. Now, I'm not sure if it is towards helis or if it is racial. The last time I was there, they only hassled the two heli guys who happened to be asians who happened to be VERY POLITE. One of them was hovering his Raptor 60 in the heli area and he got within 50 yards of the runway (far end) and one of the officials came over right on cue. The heli was nowhere near the runway...at least not to cause any problems. I was flying my little Trex there once and I did my signature flip as I began the circut (note there was NO ONE in the air, on the runway, or on the flight line) and some old geezer immediately and rudely yelled at me to do it off the runway. Another instance was when I just got my new DX7. Another old geezer rudely approached me and asked me what channel I was on. I quickly replied its 2.4 ghz and he walked away and grumbled "well, we dont know that" with a very rude attitude. Needless to say, I dont fly there anymore. They can have their redneck field.

I feel very welcome at my field. Although some of them have very strong opinions of some helicopters and others they are very welcoming. They also have a set of rules. I think a rules board should be posted up so everybody knows what they are and aren't allowed to do.

smiliar probs here in hawaii

When i was just flying planes most of the members in our clubs attitude towards me were very pleasant. As soon as I got a heli or two, attitudes from some members towards me were slightly different. They'd come up and check out my planes and ask questions and very pleasant to talk to. Now that I fly helis its different, I see and hear the attitudes that the plane pilots have when they see one of us heli guys pull out our heli. I've mentioned it to a few plane pilots and they say "no we don't have a problem with you heli guys," or "well we can't land when you're hovering over the runway." Things like that bothers me being that if I hovered my plane over the runway no one ever told me I couldn't do that. See the difference!!

Its like what the planes do in the same area as helis is acceptable by them. But lo and behold if a heli were to do the same thing, people get upset. As for the type of members that give attitudes to us heli guys at our field, there the older members of the club; not all the older members of the club do it but the ones that do are older. They like to come over and see what kind of heli we got, electronics, power plants etc., there curious to see whats in a heli, and how it works so forth. But when were ready to go up, or already up in the air that's when the attitudes start coming our way. The way I see it, if I'm paying my club dues like everyone else, abide by AMA and Club rules I should be able to fly whatever I want to fly. Our club isn't called Airplane Club, so why discriminate us heli pilots. I just want the respect on the field I deserve just like the respect I show towards them. When there landing I make sure to stay clear of there path to the runway.

Anyways to make a short story long.......hehehe

Aloha

I was just wondering if this was at the MARCS field. I heard that it was not heli-friendly and only went there on one occasion anyway, but I never thought helis were not allowed. Maybe I'll try the "fly the plank first" trick this summer.

I don't get to Madison often enough to bother joining anyway but I wouldn't mind flying there once this summer to see if there is any heli interest.

Yeah well the general rule seems to be the older the club, the more low tolerance prima-donna oldtimers, the fewer new members, and the least tolerance for helis. Its OK, they can experience the slow death that will follow.
