Women Pilots > Has anyone gotten hassled at the field?

YES!
The only time I've been hassled was when it was by some plank flyers, and you can really feel they had a 'hatred' towards anyone with a heli.

In addition it seems like a new set of rules get pulled out for us.

I'm new, where is the reset button on this radio?

Everybody has the right to fly his or her aircraft weather it be a heli or a plank.and everbody should stand there ground on this and not back away because somebody has a problem.in time they will have to get over it.

Wow- I flew my first flight with the nice guys at SRW in Brooklyn and since have not had an opportunity to go back. So I have flown in my yard constantly looking for a club near me to fly at. I really don't wnat to drive 3 hours round-trip, but in order to get better I think that I need to talk to people with experience. But my goodness, to hell with it. I should just fly in the 50 square yards I have surrounded by trees and obstacles. There is a club very close by but when I finally found them and talked to them, the older gentleman was (I guess this is a cliché by now) not to warm. The younger guy (in his 40s) was very kind. But I don't want to step on toes (these guys have been there since the 60s- I used to go watch them fly planes as a kid in the early 80s) and though I was very exited and adamant to find them, Sort have given up on the idea since it looked like such a hassle. I said "Finally, you guys are here. Its a pleasure to meet you. I would love to become a member of your club as I just recently entered the RC flying hobby." The one guy almost killed me with his eyes. "You CANT JUST BECOME A MEMBER, just like THAT!" he said. I said that that was not what I was suggesting and tried to kill with kindness. For the rest of the conversation I spoke only to the other guy. I have dealt with clicks and that crap my whole life in one way or another. Who needs it? I certainly don't. I would love to meet people who fly helis and it would be much more fun. But I won't put up with that kind on nonsense. Too bad. I was looking forward to it.

It's just human nature to fight changes, especially when you are set in your ways.. Who knows, maybe when us heli pilots are old(er), there may be a new flying machine that will scare the hell out of us.. And some of us will have the same attitude that these old(er) plank pilots have now..

I had had the funniest image of me when I'm old chasing the kids away from the club because they wanted to fly their new fangled nuclear powered RC ufo's yelling we don't fly things here as I get ready to start my antique Aurora

When I was growing up I learned and had to respect my elders. As an adult this upbringing has purty much stuck with me, however it really grates at me when these same grumpy 'ol guys tell me NOT to do something at the field and when you turn around they are doing just that!

Yes I've been hassled and I have so far been very tolerant, I sure hope I don't grow up grumpy like them!!!!!!!

PS OUCaptain I'll probably be there with you with a V1 Raptor 30 with 15% fuel. I wonder if those nuclear powered RC ufo's work on mind control instead of with a Futaba 14?

My club is mainly planks and many of them are anti heli as well as being financially well off and overtly snobbish. I've found that being superficially friendly and interested in planks has eased the acceptance of me to the point where I can do my own thing without repercussion apart frome being buzzed, so I just get out then way. It's fascinating how relationships at the field operate at so many different levels.

Growing up my father and I were members of a club. He was actually the president of the club, we had 28 airplanes including a couple ducted fans. I became pretty good on the planes by the time I was 12, people were having me test fly their planes and stuff and I was an instructor. I decided to get into helis and they made me hover on the other side of the parking lot. They put a peice of plywood out there for a "pad." Haha....Oh well, I just took my heli to a heli field. (Tombass park in Houston) Great group of guys out there.

The above post courtesy of you tax dollars hard at work. Enjoy.

Snobbish would be the appropiate word for what I have experienced going to some of the clubs around here. This happened when I had taken a break for the helis and was flying mainly planks. With that stated, I don't think the "club" scene is for me. If I wanted to deal with brown-nosing and political BS....I would stay at work 24-7 I am the youngest guy that flies with a bunch of FRIENDS at a 65ac field that the county lets us use. It's funny, I'm 39 and I'm the youngest We have a couple of guys well into their 70's and they think the heli is the greatest thing since sliced bread. One of the guys flys his old dope covered plane adapted to RC that he built as a kid....60 years ago!!! A couple of the other guys that are near my age have gotten into the helis after I got back into it and started bringing them out to the field. Now if you come out and act like your a know it all on planks or helis, you won't recieve much help from us....why should we help...you already know it all. The only rules at our "club", are that there are no rules....except don't be an idiot. We also don't ask for AMA. Bottom line is that the "old guys" that I fly with are pretty cool. One other thing on clubs. I usally don't fly at most sanctioned clubs because I ask myself "why do I want to go somewhere to enjoy my hobby with folks that I wouldn't hang around anywhere else?" Like I said earlier, If I wanted to do that, I would stay at work most of the time.

EDIT: You guys that get a hard time, you can fly with me and my friends at our "Un-Club" anytime you like.....Just don't be an idiot!

Get you head out of your A$$. I didn't say everyone could do what I do. You do give a perfect example of why I don't fly at "clubs". It's that same down the nose attitude that you exemplify that I avoid. Don't worry, I won't ask you to fly with us. We are not a "club". We are a group of friends that fly together. Find me a club where everybody is "friends".....I don't think you can. Why do I need to check for AMA, when I am not flying at a club. Amazing, my friends and I have been flying together since 95, the AMA hasn't helped us yet. Also, I wouldn't go to fly if I wasn't having fun, so to presume you know me or how we treat folks is typical "clubism."

Sure there are a lot of "nice" folks at clubs......probably because they don't have 65ac fields to fly in.

Charge, lets put it like this.......GET A LIFE.

1.No one gets hurt in my fantasy world: Tell that to my 2 missing fingers.....AMA didn't help on that either.

2. Insurance: I have homeowners...which will pay before AMA

3. Somebody elses property: I have the blessing of the county that owns the open field

3. AMA: Only works for getting into a sanctioned event or field....which I'm not flying at.

And finally: Don't know who I am Well that's a plus for me.

did you lose your fingers flying heli or airplane? was it self inflicted ? some accidents can bring law suits to the property owners.these days we all need to protect those that let us use there property.the AMA protects are santiond flying feilds with 2.5 millon dollars worth of libilty ins.I hope that your actions don't cost us the loss of the few flying feilds that are available to all of us.the club i belong to operates on town property and we have ama to protect them so we ck for ama at our feild.and yes we are all frends there, are club is both heli and airplanes.politics is what can make or brake any club sometimes you just have to work at it a little harder and not give up and run someplace else to fly,we all have rights sometimes all you need to do is try harder for what you know to be the right thing.I think Charge was right when he said you didn't help anybody by running away when the going got alittle tough!so get your head out of the ground walk tall like an american should!

I cut my fingers off when flying planks. It was at the county airport that we used to fly at. Also, I haven't run away from anything. I went as a guest a couple of times and saw what went on at the fields that I have attended. Also, being American doesn't have anything to do with it.

Oh yea, I've cost many folks their flying fields..

Also, working a little harder because of politics.....you guys need to get a life. If I don't want to play politics, it's my choice not to do it.

How bout you "chicken littles" read the thread from the beginning, or even read the title. Just because I am bold enough to say what most folks think of 75% of most club attitudes, ,makes me the bad guy.

I've been closer to being hit by aircraft, seen more aircraft shot down and have observed more STUPID stuff at sanctioned fields than I ever had flying with my "outlaw" friends.

To each their own. That's what makes me an American!!! I can't even believe you made that reference.

I'd give anything for a small group of friends to fly with on private land and without the hassles of club politics and the AMA.
