Women Pilots > Has anyone gotten hassled at the field?

My post was not ment to offend anyone.
Infact I have not had any problems at all with the clubs or people around here.
Quote
Jumping in out of turn, especially when someone has a model running and ready to be taken to the flying area, who then has to shut down because someone started ther heli, rushed out to the field and is now flying in close so no one can safley taxi in or out, take off or land.

I know you can't be talking about me running on to the field and flying before someone else has a chance to.
Maybe I hopped over the fence once but no one was put in danger in any way at all infact no one was even there to see this except you.
I speak of other fields that I know of (not around here)and that was a long time ago and many helis ago. I've gone to many flying sites in other states too and I've seen my share of rudeness where the people were downrite nasty because they know you want to share the sky and they aren't afraid to let you know it. The additude was so bad you don't even want to take a plane out of the car because you know you have good chance of being shot down.
You can't say that I disobey the rules or that I am rude in any way. I have never been nasty in any way to anyone at the club. How could you say that about me when you know it isn't true. I'm not that kind of person. Maybe I don't stand behind the barracades all the time but I have my reasons for that and I'm not the only one. If the club has a problem with me they would have said something. I only fly when no one else is in the air. And of the 3 or 4 flights I take through out the day with the heli they only last 15 to 20 minuts if that. The rest of the time I BS like everyone else does.
So don't be badmouthing me saying things like I disobey the rules and I'm rude. I would never say that about you even if I knew it to be true.

Anyway I hope your feeling better soon and can come out and fly.

BULL CR*P.. I'm older (67) and I fly planks and helis and welcome anyone, including gliders. I have helped 8 yr olds to 70 yr olds. You must be showing up with an attitude, it shows in your post. You probably walk in and act like you own the place....

I have gotten nothing but grief(for the most part anyway)from the "older crowd" at our field. I DID NOT show up with an attitude at first but you can bet I have one now! As for gramps above, I rest my case.....

not me

I have gone out to the field a couple times with my boyfriend and went out once on my own. While I have not flown yet, everyone has been willing to be helpful. Granted I understand that sometimes heli pilots get some hasseling from their fixed wing comrads, but we are all just trying to fly.

Hey Heather, I'm really happy to know that you are not hasseled. I have never had any problems at all with anyone at any flying field I have ever been to. Everyone has always been really helpful, and actually happy to see a female in the R.C. world. Especially heli's. Every time I go to our club field, the guys always want to see how far I've come with my flying. The guys are great and I love them all. We have guys of all ages and most of them are fixed wing pilots. But we share the field with no problems. It's all about flying, no matter what your preferance. Have fun and enjoy, but always remember, sugar attracts more then sh--. Be kind, and share the field. Everyone can get along fine. Happy 4th!!!!!

Hey copter doctor!!! I know exactly what he's talking about with the club issue. I am a member of said club due to the fact that im in the army and USAAVNC 95-2 (its a fort rucker reg) States that to fly RC in and around ft.rucker if u are a military member u must be a part of a sanctioned AMA club. W/E I say I just wanna fly. Sometimes I fly there, and sometimes I dont. They use to give me a load of BS, one day I had had enough and started shootin back at em. They would tell me my heli is dangerous, so Id ask if their planes flew inverted.... so on and so on. At other clubs every one is very friendly. It just seems at this club its more of a "click" than anything else. I dont care about that, the only thing that gets my blood boiling is im required by the army to fly there.... and the people still charge me . OH Well I guess. If ANYONE says u cant fly heli's at a place thats AMA sanctioned, ask them what the AMA stands for..... Academy of Model Aeronautics..... Not.... Academy of Airplane Aeronautics.... see if they come up with more and fire back. Ive never been one to stand down on stupid issues. Not letting a heli fly is totally BS!

This post is a perfect example why I fly alone... I dont have to put up with the A HOLES telling me when, where and how I can fly.

Please read every WORD lest you believe you may be being "lumped" into some category.

At many of the fields I have been to that have had "resistance" to helicopters, most has been well characterized by the older gentlemen being fearful of the helicopters. They don't understand them. they don't understand the flight envelope. And most of all, they are marginalized by all the activity and interest shown by people that is well outside their domain of expertice. They can't express their mastery of the devices thereby showing their value and experience to the hobby.

Unfortunately I haven't found too many ways to include them like asking about engine tune or wind patterns because the application for helicopters is differen than what they understand.
Until people open their minds more (fat chance) or heli's become more prevalent, we will just have to work towards eliminating stupid rules and unwarranted bias against fellow aircraft pilots.

Just $.02 worth

Heli's don't fly they just scare the ground away!

Here's something right out of the book for online etiquite:

Read a message as if you have no personal involvement or attachment to the topic. If you find yourself getting upset about something, take a step back and ask yourself if you'd be upset about it from an unrelated perspective. If you can honestly answer yes, then flame away!

heh... the last part is my own addition

WOW

I just started reading this thread because I am amased that Women have finally gotten, their long awaited acceptance into this wonderful hobby. I am appalled that it has become a thread of bickering back and forth. I am really lucky that I belong to a club (KITSAP ARCS, in Port Orchard Washington) that does not discriminate on what type model you fly, yes we have folks who are older and some who are younger (8-???) and we all seem to get along just fine. I would not have it any other way, maybe it is because before you fly at our club we make sure that the new members understand all the rules. That is always key to a happy co-existance.

It's just human nature to fight changes, especially when you are set in your ways.. Who knows, maybe when us heli pilots are old(er), there may be a new flying machine that will scare the hell out of us.. And some of us will have the same attitude that these old(er) plank pilots have now..

.. I can't believe I wrote that.. (:>

I've never even flown at an actual flying field. I used to fly in La Jolla over the 805, if you've aver looked at some of Augusto's videos you might have seen it. It was just an empty lot where some really cool guys hung out to fly. I went to a couple fields in southern Cal area and didn't even want to take my heli out of the truck. The worst was one time I was driving on the 167 outside of Puyallup, WA and saw some people flying heli's from the freeway. I found my way over and thought I would join in on the fun. Never felt so out of place. I tried to talk to some of them but I guess I had some sort of sign on my forehead that said "not good enough" or "you people are better than me". Luckily I live on a huge piece of property now and I can fly right outside my door. Plus I'm an outdoors type person and I like to go camping alot and take my heli's with me. The places I camp there is no one else around. Most of the people I've met in this hobby are really great but I guess there are all kinds of people no matter what your in to.

I have flown at many fields all across this fine country and I HAVE seen this attitude from plank flyers. What many of them forget is that most heli pilots flew planks first. When I moved to Ohio I was very happy to find a field right down the road from my house. After seeing the attitude from those guys, I chose to fly out in the cow pastures instead. When this bunch lost the use of the field, I was not bummed about it. This problem has been around for a long time, and sadly won't go away any time soon. The best we can do is be nice in spite of the attitude.

P.S. now I have my OWN flying field, and everyone is welcome, except those that have a problem with helis!!

It would be an honor to have women fly at the field. Anyone in the Cincy area that is looking for a place to fly, drop me a PM, I'll give you directions. We have full size fixed-wing, para-sails, autogyros, hang-gliders (powered and nonpowered) and helicopters. I like flying with the gliders.

I think it has a lot to do with the flying field you go to. There is one such field near me where if you are flying anything less than a 30% high-dollar plane, they either ignore you or point and laugh (just a small fraction of the regulars). There have also been some very helpful and interesting individuals. I find that the "jerks" generally don't fly helis because they don't understand them. You know the old saying "They fear that which they do not understand." That's probably it in a nutshell.

I consider myself a below-average heli pilot and I've had 30-year hardcore 3-D fixed wing pilots congratulate me on my hovering skills. They usually say "man, that's just too much to think about."

Some guys can definitely "scare" a person away from a certain flying field sometimes. Just keep an eye out for the good guys (&gals).

Happy flying!!!

Rod

This whole deal with attitudes suck. Why cant plankers and helis enjoy this hobby toghether. What really sucks is you pay your dues at a field and cant even get a turn to fly your heli because airplanes are constantly in the air.We seem to be the outcast.

We seem to be the outcast.

That's not always the case. Some folks don't mind seeing the helis and some do. I find the older class of flyers (the ones set in their ways) seem to be more intolerant of them. You can have a group of plankers sitting around all day not even flying and then when a heli goes in the air all of a sudden someone feels like they need to have a flight on their plane. Then it becomes (what's that heli doing out there? There's too many of those things here.) That's when you run into a problem. Then your one flight that your trying to take turns into a big heli problem and people can only find the faults.
We need more fields like SRW in Brooklyn NY.Helis only
Fly unharassed. Just be safe.
