e-Lite Machines Corona > Flying the Corona tail...a question about stability...

I'm looking at going from a Revolution PZ200 piezo gyro to a Futaba Gy401. What can I expect in terms of stability of the tail? I'm looking for a solution to getting spun around by the wind, but I don't want to fool myself into thinking that a new gyro will solve my problem of keeping orientation....or will it?

I'm also thinking of upgrading my tail servo to a Futaba HS-81 from a JR nes333. Anybody know if that will improve response, or will it be the same?

I can just talk for myself, but I had a HH AlignGyro on my Corona and it was not flyable with that one. I changed it to a Futaba GY240 and a Hitec HS81 servo, and I could not be happier with it. Now I am actually flying and not correcting the tail all the time, a whole different heli to fly. I would say go for it, I am sure you will be happy.

The never-ending Corona tail stability.

I started out with a GY401 and HS-81 (w/ nylon gears and get an extra set) and thought it was a good combo. Even the 240 with HS-81 is good. However, I'm reading where a few people prefer the HS-56HB. Remember, the stock Corona tail is a bit sloppy, especially when you increase head speed or decrease or increase throttle (being fixed pitch and all) or when the wind hits you. However, get rid of slop and vibration and the 240 or 401 are about as good as it gets for the $$$ with a Corona.

Right now I'm using an Airtronics 94761 digital servo with the GY401. Rock solid. Though I'm using the B'Tech tail, it would probably be excellent with the stock set up as well. Its smaller than the HS-81, but you could easily mod an adapter. For digital, its cheaper and lighter than the big Futaba S9254. Even the smaller Futaba S9650 digital servo can't be beat at $59.

The Futaba GY240 and a Hitec HS81MG servo is solid combo for the Corona.

The problem is: The better and faster the gyro....the worst it will do on the Corona. Especially if you are running a good motor like a Hacker and lipos. The frame rate of the gyro is so much faster than what the servo can produce in movement. I had a JR 500T....it would tail hunt. I tried a CSM....same thing with the tail hunting. Tried different servo and longer servo arms. Same thing. So....a buddy of mine told me to stop wasting time, money and sanity and just buy a used GY240. That was it! I dailed the gain down to 40% and she is ROCK SOLID! Buy the GY240 and fix it for good and go flying!!!!!

Another vote for the 240/HS81MG combo - never had any tail problems...

Im flying mine with the mechanical gyro off the 110-116 (using the same blades and hub also from 110-116). The tail isnt what you call rock solid but it really wasnt meant to be. flys pretty good to me.

Still on the learning curve here for sure. I've been fooling with the settings and still no changes. When I take off the tail swings to the left and any amount of stick won't stop it. At the same time the heli pitches to the left as well. This is with just changing out the gyro. I'm using the 7cap TX. I'm going to start from scratch and try to figure out what's going on. I think it's a TX set up problem. Can't fly it at all currently.

you do not have to fly the coronna in heli mode on your radio unless you have a 401 or equivalent gyro with controls on the radio it can be flown on any 4 channal radio so with that said get out of heli mode and focus on the machanics make sure the swash is level and you gyro is making corrections in the right direction with the tx on the make sure none of the channals in your radio are reversed from there on out just simple trim should be all that is needed email me if you have anymore trouble had one flew one loved it
