Tools and Field Equipment > What tools do you use?

Hey Everyone,

I want to go out and get some tools (you know the ones I should have gotten a long time ago...lol)and I was just wondering what you guys have? Obviously I mean the tools you use to build your heli, set it up, and repair it.

I already have a T&T machined pitch guage, ball link resizing tool, and ball link removal tool. I also have a set of metric bondhus L-shaped allen wrenches.

Im going to get the dubro tru spin balancer (i think that's what it's called) so i can use that to balance stuff(obviously). Then I'm going to get a dial indicator with stand and that ruler with a dial indicator.

Next I want to get those precision ground hex drivers with the aluminum handles. Which ones would you guys recommend? I know there are quite a few (associated,duratrax,integy...ect) with all different prices, but i want to know which one is probably the best.

Also i was thinking of getting a set of precision screwdrivers (phillips and flat head). Are there any recomendations as to which brand is best??

In case your wondering I'm planning on getting the new miniair 50 so I want to have the right tool for the job. Plus I have a heli (miniair S.E) sitting here that I want to go over and rebalance everything.

So if you dont mind, please give me a list of stuff I should get and possible names and pictures. Thanks again everyone!

Thorp, Hudi, OFNA, Integy all make nice hex drivers. I had a set of Integys that went down the road with my cars a few years ago and I wish I had them back now. Using some cheaper Ebay ones at the moment. I like the Wiha stuff. Nice screwdrivers and hex drivers. A mini wrench set is nice too.

I have the hex drivers from Heliproz, Maverik, and they are great. They offer two sets and I have both, the set that costs around $29 is much better.

Yep.

Here it is in action.....

Spot the beam on a far wall either sideways, backwards and you can see all the nasty interactions that you never knew were there

I am not very knowledgeable on helis so please forgive if this is a stupid question. What interactions might there be?

In a simple manner, it's the fact that 3 servos are needed to move the swashplate.

A small variation in the geometry of the links (angle between servo wheel and link at neutral position for example) or variation in speed/precision of one of the servo can cause small unwanted 'interactions'.

For example, applying collective pitch the 3 servos will move together in the same direction to raise or lower the swashplate. During this up or down movement the swashplate should not tilt sideways and/or front-back. Sometime (because of the previous paragraph) it can introduce a small left movement (for example) when the collective is at maximum pitch.

Link geometry needs to be spot on, and sometime radio setup need to be tweaked to remove small unwanted 'interactions'.

Thank you mdu6 for taking the time to explain that. Does that happen with mechanical mix layouts as per the Raptors or are you referring to eccpm?

I ask this because I have just completed the build of my second Raptor (50SE) and I am little bit nervous about how well I have set it up.

Cheers

Nick
