Sunday flying - second hover + new carpet

Goal has always been to "fly around" in the back yard. Learning to fly the Raptor means practice... so where better than in the back yard, next to the shop and no driving to field each day?

A smooth surface seems to help with the woofle-ball training gear I picked up. And with playing with a small electric too, grass has some issues... So I bought a piece of carpet for a landing pad in the back yard; used a chain to weigh it down. Just $20 for an 11x11ft piece (turned out to be brand new shag). What a way to soil it the first day with oily Nitro smoke...

This was flying in the back yard on Sunday evening... 2nd day hovering the Raptor and messing up a nice new piece of carpet in the process!

flying in San Antonio

Afternoon,

A short note to invite folks by to see some video clips on my website, of the local guys flying out at the field in San Antonio this past Saturday.

Its some of my first RC heli video clips, so no fancy title pages or rock music back ground, just the noisey buzzing sound from some 50 and 90 class engines.

When you gonna head up here?......just curious.
I know that drive is long, but the times I've gone down to your side of town it only takes about 35 minutes.
Thats from the target field, maybe a little farther from ARCA.

later.

Javier & Vince,
Yeah, I'm gonna have to get off my lazy butt and come on up there pretty soon. But that's wayyyy outta my zone man! See I have this "zone" I like to stay in, some of my buddies says it's only about a 1 mile radius but thats just crazy cuz it's about 5 miles to the LHS, so that means it's at least a 5 mile radius!!

Have any of you heard from Mike?? He was supposed to come flying Sunday, even said "I'm all charged up and about ready to go" then nothing..... I sent him a pm, no reply. Hope alls well with him.

Georgetown Heli Fun Fly - cancelled

`
FYI only...

The Heli Fun Fly in Georgetown, on October 20, 21, 22, has been cancelled.

Found out visiting the Georgetown Aero Modelers Assoc site...
http://www.gamarc.org
...and thought would pass on the word. There were no details as to why. Maybe someone may consider having something similar, somewhere else around Austin? (hint hint)

Frolin,
As you might have read in the thread Javier pointed you to, the ARCA club scheduled their fun fly for the same weekend as I did. They also managed to go through back channels and get an AMA sanction in a time frame that would otherwise be considered impossible. This basically yanked the rug out from under us.

I could not find another weekend with good night flying conditions that wasn't also close to another big event. So, I canceled the event. Hopefully, it will be different next year.

Hi Joe, Javier,

Thanks for the reply and info. So I gather, two clubs in the Austin area both scheduled a Helicopter Fun Fly in October and both picked the same weekend - ugh. That is guessing the other event is a Heli thing, per that club's website event page.

Has there been any discussion between the two clubs, to maybe have one in the Fall and one in the Spring? Means two great events, different times of the year.

curious,

I dont know if there has been a discussion about it, But I know that last year GAMA's first Heli FF was held in April, and it was a great turn out.

As far back as I can remember(but I may be wrong) ARCA's Heli FF has always been around October(like this year). So planning another Heli FF in october will probably not work, but maybe next year the two clubs can work it out.

It's been said as a joke that GAMA and ARCA are like the Hatfields and McCoy's of the Austin Area R/C community....

John,

Jess and I are going to be flying at the Target field Saturday morning at 9am. Next weekend I'll come down to the HCAM field. Think of it as a recruiting mission for new members.

Jess and I were there from about 9:20-10:45. We both had things going on later this morning and couldn't stay long.

I'm going to check out the HCAM field at about 2pm today.

Phil,

Maybe better suited for the HCAM thread (maybe better to reply there meaning since that topic line), but can you tell us what you see at the field today? Meaning, what they have done and working to do, so from our loose memory of how the field is setup, tell us what they done or are they doing to set aside the 3D area, and/or Helicopter hovering area, and where?

curious,
