I was helping a friend at the field with his Scaedu 50 (Not Evo) with OS 50 Hyper, 401/9253, 600mm MS Modeslport carbon fiber main and 97mm at the tail.
I fix his wagging tail since he has to much gain on the rudder then I lean the engine and the heli was flying OK.
Next thing my friend ask me was to help him to set up the idle up.
This thing took me a lot of time because I need to reset all the ball links and his plastic washout guide pin unit was to thick and does not allow the washout base to travel more up in order to get the desire + deggress. I need to remove that part and sanded until it allow the washout base to travel more up.
I set it like +10 -10
We went to try it to see how it fly when sudenly we hear a strong noise, the nose want to go to one side, we hear also the belt slip then the heli went 360 like crazy.......flip auto rotation switch and landed safe
So we was checking the tail and found out no tails blades
Its look like the plastic tail balde holder broke were the 3mm screw goes and the only thing thats come to my mind is that maybe this happend because the carbon fiber 97mm Modeslport tail blades was to heavy and the inertia broke the plastic tail blade holders.

So what you think what was the problem? Have any of you has suffer this same problem? Do my friend needs aluminum tail blade holders?

first the photographer should learn how to use the auto-focus
feature of teh camera so you dont get sharp pictures of grass
but fuzzy pix of teh object.

there are no metal tail holders (at least by hirobo).

Just a thought....But what was the root of the tail blades?

Was it less than 5mm?

The blade holders fit a 5mm root blade perfectly...
It the blades root is thinner, and no spacers where used..it might cause stress at that particular point if over tightened.

Root of the tail blades was OK. I check that when I was checking the 401 gyro set up.
They was not over tightened, they can move a little free.

One thing that I remeber is that when we was flying, it trow one tail blade first........The helicopter nose goes 45º........It was holding the nose with one tail blade then I hear the belt slipping and then it trow the other tail blades and the heli goes crazy in 360º

This happened to me 3 times. I was able to land safely each time, but it does a lot of damage. Be sure to check the tail output shaft, both pulleys and the belt very carefully. The first time it happened to me it stripped both pulleys clean, bent the tail boom, took half the teeth off the belt and bent the tail shaft. The other two times, it stripped the input pulley and bent the tail shaft.

I'm at a loss to explain why it kept happening. I have 2 EVO 50s and it kept happening to the same one. The other NEVER tossed a blade. I run a head speed of 1950 with lightweight 92mm carbon tail blades. I have since upgraded both machines to the Freya tail hub and grips. Haven't thrown a blade since.

There are no decent metal grips available. The only ones I could find don't use a thrust bearing. The Freya grips seem to be much stronger, and you get the bonus of a bigger disk.

Just an idea but did your friend shaved off a little material from the tail blade holders?

When using non standart tail blades (which sometimes arn't a perfect fit) like the NHP 95mm tail blades, some people enlarge the blade holders by shaving material off. I did this myself with not so good results (have gone back to MAH 92mm since then).

Maybe that was the problem... removing strength from the holders? what root thickness do those 97mm blades have?!

How much this upgrade cost? Can I use the radial bearings from the old tail blade holders and just buy the trust bearings or do the Freya tail hub & blade holder use diferent radial size bearings?

Just a theory to hash about.

Consider the possibility that one blade grip may have suffered some previous damage in a rough landing, bad auto or a firm bump in transport. It may have then failed during the setup flight. After the first blade separated the resulting vibration and bent shaft forcing the remaining blade out of track may have overloaded the second grip.

I experienced a similar situation while helping a Shuttle ZXX owner some time ago. He had rebuilt after a minor crash and wanted it test flown. A mild 1500 rpm 10 foot hover developed into a quick pirouette with a loud buzz. A prompt and successful spinning landing followed with one missing blade, part of its grip and a severely bent tail shaft. We stumbled across the tossed tail blade and part grip three days later, it had traveled over an industrial building, cleared a parking lot and landed in the grass at the edge of the street about 250’ away. I now more carefully inspect and pull on the tail blades if they have suffered any mistreatment.

I would completely agree with Rob I have changed the tails to the Freya unit and run 92mm blades on both my evos and never a problem.
Watch for the hub and the output shaft being bent they are very easily damaged. So much so I am running a TT 90 SE hub on my Freya as a certain well known 3D flyer managed to bend 2 hirobo hubs in flight causing vibration. He also experienced problems on his Avant and did the conversion and never a problem since so I have tried it myself and so far excellent. Good luck with the conversion you will be pleased with it when you have done it, in addition it will give you greater choice of blades to try as many more fit perfectly.
Didn't quite grasp all the sanding etc to get 10 + and 10 - I have never had a problem getting in excess of 10 without altering anything

I have seen similar happen with large tail blades and the speedup gear when used togather. Seems like the extra speed and larger blades puts a lot of force on the grips.

Normal for the Evo. Once it spins up, all is fine. I was worried about the same thing when I built mine.

Hello Jon, I really dont know, this helicopter belong to a flying budy and I dont think he has a tail speed-up gear in it.
This Scaedu 50 was the first edition that Hirobo release to the market.
This guy use to have a Kyosho Concept 46 plagued with a lot of problems and when Hirobo release the Scaedu he buyed inmediatelly.

Modelhangar, my friend build his own heli but when I was setting his heli for 3D, I need to reset all his ball links and the problem was that the washout guide pin was to thick and does not allow the washout to move more up. I have a similar part in metal and is not to thick, so the only thing thats come to my mind was to sand the exess



I will advise this dude to put the Freya upgrade.
