Scale Model RC Helicopters > Basecoat / Clearcoat MFG Suggestions?

I am looking for a paint system to use with my MD900 project. I have the paint scheme picked out already and need a good basecoat/clearcoat system to cover it with. The majority of the heli will be a bright (not dayglo) yellow. I have had some difficulties painting yellow over a grey primer in the past and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions. Specific references to MFG, system names, and product numbers would be appreciated.

RM- Diamont

Mark,

I have had great luck with RM Diamont base clear systems.. Here is a link to a outfit that I get all my paint from and very good prices.

Give them a call and they will get you going!

Thanks, I will give them a call. Have you had any problems with fuel damage or durability with this product? It is going on my Vario MD900 that I plan on competing with.

Thanks,
Mark

I'm a big fan of House of Kolors stuff. The system works with 2 part primer, a white primer sealer, base coat, and of course a two part clear. Because of the white primer sealer you can put pretty much any color you want without having to deal with bleed through. You can get it in small quantities at www.innate.com. He sells smaller kits to get you whatever you need. He also will help you to make sure you get the right stuff and know how to use it.

Mark,

I have not had any problems with the nitro, yet I only run 15% nitro. As long as you wipe them with soap and water after you fly they will last for ever! The link I sent you also carries House or Kolor too but man you get into some pretty crazy colors and $$$$.... Yet if your building a Vario you may as well do something that really stands out!

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Prior to painting the yellow, you MUST apply a white basecoat. No amount of yellow will cover over any darker color (like your gray primer). It's a yellow pigment thing.

The PPG line of paints also work well and have a wide variety of colors and prices. I was originally going to shoot Diamont on the Airmed but after getting a quote of over $100 for a quart of generic red decided to look for something a little more affordable. I was able to find a red that perfectly matched the vinyl I was using without needing a computer match mix and ended up spending under $35.

They are at www.ppg.com

I did go to the site that you posted but have yet to call them. House of Kolor does have some crazy colors, but I am looking for something like a standard Corvette/Mustang yellow.

Bill

I learned that lesson the hard way last time I shot yellow over grey primer. It didn't turn out very good and it was on a $9,000 aircraft propeller. So I don't want to make the same mistake again. Especially on this project. The House of Kolor had a white primer sealer which is the only one that I have seen mentioned yet.

Todd

I personally am a big fan of PPG. It is what we used on the aircraft propellers that I used to paint. The only exception was that it was a high solids (DELTA) system that didn't have a clearcoat. The price looks right too.

The problem that I am having with all of these web sites like House of Color or PPG for that matter, is that they have so many different "systems." I don't even know where to start when I go to PPG's web site. Heck, I don't really know the difference between a kandi and a pearl finish. I just want a simple, yellow

Thanks Again,
Mark

You are better off just going to the store which carries the paint, and they will have the color chip books there for you to pick out the color. Then, just tell them you want it in base coat/ clear coat, and they will mix you the appropriate paint. I have used the PPG and BASF paint for a long time, and you will not go wrong with their products. BASF's clear, which is DC92, is probably the best two part clear i have used in a long time. Great shine, great depth, and retention. You can also use a fast hardner with the clear, so it becomes dry to the touch in about 1/2 hour.

Thanks Joe,

I kind of figured that was going to be the best approach. But I wanted to get some part numbers. We have a local PPG dealer here and being able to look at a chip would be best. I didn't know it was as easy as telling them that you want it in basecoat/clearcoat though.

Thanks Again,

Yep...the best best is to go to a local automotive paint store. You can look up the color you want and then ask them for price alternatives on single or base coat/clear coat paints. You can also make sure everything you're getting is compatible and won't wrinkle up on application.

base coat/clearcoat

Slider:

I'm currently involved with painting after market parts for Yahama (cycle and snowmobiles) and we're using PPG paints. The colors such as plum, candy red, etc. which have quite a bit of transparency always utilize a base coat of silver prior to the color coat. With that you get a uniform "look" to the color and when the clear coat is applied you get a very good gloss "reflection" to the color. If you have a "run" problem prior to the clearcoat and wet sand down to the silver base you typically have to start over again as you will end up with dark spots in the color coat. It makes a great finish and this process is what I use for my Xcell canopies also. It helps to have a 17 ft. spray booth and filtered air!
