Beginners Corner > Nexus Tail Drive Wire Tip

Hey Guys,

I was just helping a fellow co-worker get his new Nexus set up when, on the fourth tank of gas, the tail drive wire snapped. We suspected wire-whipping around in the supports and tail boom.

A quick trip to the local hobby shop got us a replacement tail drive wire, but we also decided to "upgrade" it a bit....

We purchased a 36" long piece of 1/8" OD brass tubing (for $1.00) and cut it in half. We pushed out the three wire supports from inside the tail boom and drilled them out to 1/8" and reinstalled them. We then pushed the 18" section of brass tubing back into the supports and secured it with a little PFM (silicon adhesive) just to make sure it didn't go anywhere. We then lubed up the tail drive wire with grease and reinstalled it into the brass tube and hooked everything back up.

This worked exceptionally well, and I would highly recommend it next time you're working on the tail. It only took about 20 minutes to do.

Regards,

Sam,

Your tip is pretty much the same thing that Kyosho uses on the Concept SR-X and VR helis. The only difference is the SR-X drive wire guides have a rubber grommet in them that the wire guide pipe fits thru. You then slip the T/R drive wire into this pipe (after greasing it of course). The rubber grommets help with the vibration.

You'll find that a few of the standard parts on the SR-X and VR work on the upgrading the Nexus as well.

tail drive wire

Good Idea.

The Century Hawk & Falcon helicopters have always came with this "upgraded" form of wire drive system, even in the original Hawk.

This first appeared in a production heli with the introduction of the first Miniature Aircraft X-Cells. I found it worked very well and got rid of most any "whipping". So that means this technology has been with us for almost 15 years!

I have always wondered why Kyosho and others have never changed theirs. I guess as long as the consumer keeps purchasing older technology in adequate quantities there is no incentive for the manufacturers to change.

Kyosho has always had it as well. Only it was standard on the more expensive helis they offered. The Nexus is a cheap intro heli so they're not going to include the drive wire guide tube. If you can get a Nexus deluxe, Legato, Nexus 46 or Concept VR then the t/r guide tube is standard.

This is really not new for Kyosho either. The Concept 30 had this t/r guide tube as well and that was over 13 or 14 years ago. Sam was just able to find out on his own by seeing the intuitively obvious. Now he'll have much better t/r response.
