I’m sure most of you will think this is a crazy question. I’ve been flying fixed wing for 13 years and learned to fly on my own, I fly with my thumbs. I have a Raptor 30 that I haven’t flown yet and am currently using RealFlight to train on this winter. Do you experienced heli pilot feel it is better to use fingers and thumb or just your thumbs? Or doesn’t it matter?
Thanks,
Dennis

They Poll should be

Thumbs only or Thumbs and Fingers.

I don't think anyone flys fingers only except the old fixed wingers who might have lost a thumb trying to flip a prop weird.

Agreed! I would change the poll. I can't imagine fingers only. I think I would try toes only first. Just kidding. I personaly am a finger and thumbs man.

Thumbs or Thumbs and Fingers

Definately thumbs only. Never could get two digits on the same hand to work together. Thumbs finally had to take over and rule the flight...

Both...

I fly helis with my thumbs and fingers, and fly the planks with only thumbs. Tried to use only thumbs on the helis...kind of got scary for a while. I also use a neckstrap with the helis.

I started learning with T&F's on helis and then on planes. I have better control with the rudder too! (on both). I have seen a few plane crashes that involved a persons thumb slipping off the stick , I don't want that with my planes or helis.
I can be real precise about the manuvers aswell.

This is a pretty cool poll. I've always wondered myself about who flies with both thumb and finger and who doesn't. I personally use my thumb only and seems to work for me.....

in the process of switching

I was always a thumber and had good control. I decided to try to switch to thumb finger over the long winter. I've been doing indoor plane, simulator, and a small amount of outdoor heli flying. My opinion so far is I could do things (make corrections) more quickly with thumbs only. I can do things more precisely with thumb fingers. When Summer is over I'll have a final opinion. I'm hoping that the thumb/finger method will help in my coordinated 3D manuevers. By coordinated, I mean I need to hold a specific amount of rudder while transitioning the collective from pos to neg. During a pirouetting flip or loop, it was hard for me to hold a consistent amount of rudder through the manuever with thumbs only. I am hoping that the pinch method will clean these tricks up for me. I do know that there are very good people that use thumbs only. I'm just trying both methods for myself.

Thumbs and fingers and I have just started using a tray. I like the tray a lot and believe that the thumb and finger is a more precise method but have always done that so hard for me to be objective about thumbs only.

My motto is this..Fly...Rebuild...Fly

Thumbs as I can move the sticks faster that way. Yup thumbs & fingers is more precise but I don't like the feel. I use a neckstrap (boy, is the 9Z heavy or what? When are we gonna see a 4.5Z - half the weight ) and some expo to make it more precise in the center.

Thumbs vs. Thumbs/Fingers

My own opinion is Thumbs/Fingers. It is much easier to be precise. I'm in the horrrible process of converting one of my fellow plank flyers turned heli guy into a T/F user!!

definitely thumbs and fingers ....... you can fly much more precise. I also use a tray to "relax" my palms. besides, I have switches on my sticks and therefore a thumb flying would be a little bit awkward

Thumbs and Fingers. Still in the hovering stages but it feels better than when I tried Thumbs only. I also use a neck strap.

Poll

I have been flying for some 30 some years and have taught many people to fly as well by using both thumbs and fingers. It give stability to the control sticks, and a confidence level far above just thumbs. When your fingers get sweaty or wet they may slip. Once you go that route and later try only thumbs again, one feel like my thumb could slip off the stick, and with a heli one only knows where it will end up

Both

I use thumbs only on planks but I feel MUCH more in control with thumbs and fingers on my helos. Funny thing is I feel like I have less control with thumb an fingers while flying planks. Guess you can't teach old dogs new tricks.

Am I the only one who does this: Finger & Thumb on left stick.....Thumb only on right stick. If I use T&F on right stick I feel like I
could drop the radio, so I support the radio mainly with my right hand.
