e-Electric Conversions > Conversions..... Why bother?

Why put the extra time and money into converting any heli. It seems as if it is expensive as heck. Plus there can't be that much imrovement to warrant all that effort. (but I don't know that is why I am asking)

The reason I was looking into e-conversions is the availiblity of fuel.

Excuse me while I whip this out!

OK--Raptor-cheap parts and I keep extras for my slimers, more durable than most E-helis, near to same performance as OS50, NO MESS all over me and my car, no fuel to buy(figure out how much you spend on fuel in a year, more than you think), quieter allowing you to fly ay more places without pissing off the neighbors, a smoother runnning/flying heli. And last but not least because I'm an American and I CAN!!!! There's 11 reason's right there!!!!!

kind of sounds like a trolll question...

I went with the electric conversion for several reasons. first, I already had the helicopter. (shuttle zx, not flown in years) No mess from gas/oil after every flight. way easier to setup correctly using gov mode compared to trying to get the gas motor running correctly plus setting up an accurate throttle/pitch curve. (much respect to the gassers that get it right!) I have since converted a Raptor50-V2 and love it. very good performance and I am using the same 6 TP2100's in it that I bought for the first conversion. (the shuttle was recently retired, no damage, just not enough performance) I also bought a LOGO-10 that I put the motor/esc, and TT-550mm CF blades from the shuttle project into. It looks like it will perform very well. (I have flown it a couple of times but not any real flights with 3D, acro, etc.) Other than trying to figure out the occasional radio glitch (solved with an XP6102DX conversion) the electric and electric conversion heli's are very cool. they are fairly quiet too.

Hello guys, all my helis are glow but it look like electric helis are becoming the new kid on the block.

But honestly and with all the respect everybody deserve, what is the big deal about electric helis? IMO they are more expensive than a glow one. Batterys are super expensive and you need severals battery packs, you need a special charger, you need a special balancer to take care of each sell in order that they do not get damage or go in fire.........etc,etc.........
Bottomline is that running a electric is more expensive than a glow one.

So I have a question only for people that have both type (electrics and Glow like a Raptor 50/60 Evo 50) What is the big thing about electric helis? Are they better or fly better than glow ones........You know, maybe I am missing something

I really want to hear constructive opinions without a flame war

THX

Isaac

Why Electric Heli

I have twin EVO 50's - One Fuel and one Electric that I converted.

Both use the same parts, and I can fly the Electric in local parks where I would be chased out if I try to fly the fuel due to Smoke and noise.

I'll bet you're wrong about the more money. Maybe upfront when putting it together but afterwards not. 30% fuel isn't cheap at $27-30 a gallon. My battery pack cost $450 (10S2P TP4200) so that's about 15-16 gallons of fuel. I bet you use that much in a year! My E-Rappy50 would've cost me about $1200 to setup with everything(except battery) How much does it cost to set up a Rap OS50? About the same maybe a little more. Not only all this, but it is a learning experience, not all of us like to do the same old stuff over and over. New technology is way, way cool!! The new batteries that are coming out are going to lower the prices of the old and so on. Look at Emolis(new battery) in a E-rap50 you get 7min flighttime at less than half the cost of name brand LiPOs. The performance of the E-helis is only going to get better and better. And I plan to be there!!

I fly shuttles.. old AND newer. Slimer AND electric. The electric motor starts FIRST TIME.. EVERY TIME. The Helis weigh LESS with electric, unless you get greedy.

Now, I can only hover and FFF.. stall turns when I am brave. But I just don't break parts when I crash.

My heli doesn't vibrate.

My heli stays CLEAN. I DUST it after flying. No swabbing. No mess. Oil every ten flights.

But mainly.. the motor starts and runs exactly the way I tell it to. Every time.

BIIIG DIFFERENCE.

I converted one of my Raptor 50's to electric.

Never looked back. Sold my nitro one.

Yes. It IS more costly up front.

For me, the advantages outweigh the cost by far.

1 - less noise
2 - I can fly at the local electric club 2 mins from where I live
3 - I use e-moli battery packs ($140 for 1 pack that last 10 mins) I bought 3 so I can charge as I'm flying and literally fly non-stop all day long without breaks.
4 - no fuel mess
5 - no breakdown in parts

I love the smell, sound of nitro's, but the no-hassle-fly-all-day with the conv. is damn nice.

Engine, gears, CCPM kit is $230 at tppack.com for the Raptor 50.

Getting cheaper

... But honey it was only $$$

If you fly scale like me, electric looks and sounds just like the real thing, and all of that lovely scale detail stays intact. My Bell 47 chops and blade slaps just like the full size and everytime I fly in my neighbourhood people come out to watch smile. It would be a different story if it was a glow motor, someone would probably try and shoot it down!! Also, somehow a big electric heli always seems to impress especially when it flies for 30 mins non-stop!

Always had trouble with the motors unreliability, overheating, etc on the Lite Machines LMH 100. I put a Himax H 35 and TP 1320s in it and never looked back. I put on twice the mileage that I would have with glow because of the no hassles flying.

This topic is becoming a real question with the introduction of the Trex-600 and the eRaptor electric heli kits coming to market. If these helicopters had been available before I started converting, I doubt that I would have bothered.

Glow fuel is dirty smelly horrible stuff covering every thing in a sticky goo whinning high reving engines are noisey and anti-social . I have two electrics and a gasser -- A converted Hirobo Chinook (Seen the video yet? ) a logo 10 and a Hirobo Bell 47 gs . I can fly the electrics just about anywhere with no complaints and no goo to clean off after flight time , as for the gasser -- fill the tank up before you leave head for flying site pull the starter and away you go . I admit that initial costs are high but if you fly alot it does balance out. At the rate battery , motor and esc technology is going it is getting cheaper and flight times get longer.

I too have a converted R 50 V-2. Using the CCPM kit from TP Packs as well as the motor mount it is as simple as a mod as you could hope for with a heli. There really is no turning back once your bitten. I think the #1 reason for me liking it so much, as others have stated, is the simplicity. You turn on your radio and then plug in the heli and your flying. Talk about E-A-S-Y. And, like already stated, it runs the exact same as the last time it flew, doesn't care about the weather or needle settings. I run on 10S2PP 4200 Prolites and get just as much power as when it was glow powered. I get 6 mins of serious 3-D, and still have at least another minute in the pack, but I like to stay conservative with my packs. Yes, batteries definitely cost more upfront, but I have been flying mine hard for about 2 months now and it has been cool not spending a dime on fuel. I figure I have flown the equivalent of at least $150 in fuel if I were flying it glo, so a few more weeks, and the packs will have paid for themselves and then it will be like free flights. I still have some glo's, but they just sit because it is hard to find a place to fly, they are more cumbersome (starter, fuel, glow igniter, etc), and the clean up sucks.

Like all opinions, Elec vs. Glo will never succumb to one another, so I just agree to disagree with those that feel differently from me. I just love to fly, and electric makes that easier and faster to get going.

1ST. disregard the price of the battery when you add up the cost of the heli. The battery is the fuel source! there is very little in it! if you include a govenor electric is cheaper than IC!(in some instances I should say)!

Perhaps IMHO, a conversion is just a "see if it can be done" thing.

I have two old X-cell 60's and am considering a try at the electric conversion.

You should convert the Xcells, I have a Stratus that is converted and flies great. I have converted three R50s, two for scale helis and one I use to drag race with. Pretty much unbeatable, except when I get nervous. The R50 I race with is a belt drive set up I copied from my Razor, pics in gallery.

Forgot about my Avro 90 I'm converting now.
