e-Century Hummingbird - Swift > my FP hummingbird first flight vid...im loving this heli :)

ive only just got into helis after 15 yrs racing rc buggies..and im loving it

i got the heli 2nd hand the other week and have had about 6-7 packs thru it,im quite pleased to say its the first heli i have had.

i read all the great info on here about setting the blades up,balancing them etc and she seems to fly ok with the little knowledge i have of them hehe.

im running what looks like a 280-300 brushed motor with a 7.4v 850mah tornado lipoly and the white century giro and the speedcontroller with a mixer built in,i have a sanwa rd6000 radio but im just running with it standard apart from making it soft around the middle of the sticks for direction.

could i get a brushless for this heli?..im happy with the power the stock motor gives out since the lipoly is much lighter than the kit 9.6v nimh pack but wondered about a cheap brushless in it..and if i did would i need better lipolys?

have a look at the video my brother shot..does the heli look and fly like it should??..sorry but as i say im kinda new to these but learning quickly.

thanks dave...any pointers/suggestions welcome

It sure looks good to me. I thought for sure you were going to wack something, but it looks like you have good control. I still have a V3 with brushed motors. Never really saw the need to go brushless. Mine still flys for 19 minutes on a 2 cell 1320 lipoly.

great flying noob

that looks like a nice setup you have there.

to answer your question though, going brushless on that little guy is going to really eat into your budget. you'll need the motor (of course...~$40-50), but you'll need a brushless controller (another ~$40-50). but, then now your mix between the tail and main rotors is lost (you're still running a brushed tail so you can continue to use the stock ESC. if you choose to go brushless on the tail add another $40 for a brushless tail and another $40-50 for a brushless controller for it---each brushless motor needs its own controller).

now, since your mix is gone, you really need to get a HH gyro...GY240 will run you $90 or so new.

adds up quick, doesnt it?

my advice: leave this one the way it is. since you need to buy all that stuff anyway, you're only a $100-$200 kit away from a whole 'nother bird. get that fleet going

if it ain't broke…break it.

thans for the kind comments "noob"

im not noob to rc as i said ive raced buggies at national level for many years but these helis are fun now im getting older and wiser ..ive got pretty sharp reactions and smooth on the sticks, its just i sometimes have a brain freeze when it gets sideways on me or too close to the furniture...especially when my better half is close by.

ahh didnt realise i would have to change the giro because of the non mixing,i assumed i could do the mixing on the transmitter...shows what a noob i really am hehe..

im also running some grey coloured blades from gws,i was told these would be better running the stock 280 motor as they dont provide as much lift, now with the kit black blades and the kit nimh pack it would climb quickly with no problems except runtime, with the kit nimh and grey it wouldnt get more than 3 inches off the floor so i tried the 7.4 850 mah lipoly and it seems a nice combo.
the stock setup seemed to wander about abit too much and those blades/lipo seemed to make all the difference..heli seems to almost hover on its own if you know what i mean.

just had my first breakage..why do i let my brother goad me on hehe...

he asked my if i had managed to spin it round yet(360 on the spot)..so i said dont be stupid..then i tried, result was the heli started to climb quickly when i gave it a handfull of turn, maybe it was me just nudging the stick up a tad but i dont think i did..result was the ceiling jumped out at me and smacked my heli on the head knocking him unconsious to the floor, result one destroyed landing set(the new v3 metal skid one i had just put on 3 hrs before )

so im out of action for a bit but man i really really reaaaally love these helis now,and you lot seem a nice bunch of guys so i might just have found a new hobby.

cheers

you can do it on the transmitter...just not *YOUR* transmitter (presuming you're flying the one that came with the bird). if you're really serious about getting into the heli part of RC you can go get a nice computer radio ---Futaba 9C-on upward, a JR 6 series-on upward (i love my 9303) or another brand of your choice of heli-specific computer radio. then you can program in revo mix. but, the gyro was a cheaper alternative. one or the other will need to be done though. and, if you've never programmed a helicopter on a radio it can be quite daunting--not so much for the Hummingbird FP....but still pretty overwhelming with all the prerequisite terminology.

good luck. these things are tons of fun.

Dave,
Great to see you having fun and doing so well. I still fly my hummers and enjoy them. Stick with the stock setup they will last and not cost much to keep in the air.

glazed over that part of your original post

the rd6000 does have a 3point revo mix. *should* work just fine ....though i've never done it and no experience in setting revo mix. as a test you could turn the mix all the way down on your current setup and see if you can get the revo mix working with the stock components. if that works it shouldnt be much different to set once brushless.

sounds like you may have a chance w/o the gyro upgrade...but, find out for sure before getting all your upgrade components.

IMO the best advice is still to keep this one stock and start another project....it's going to be only marginally more expensive.

if it ain't broke…break it.

ok thanks for the info

my mixer is the pico one with the speedcontroller built into it and you cant alter it..at least theres no settings on it

as you rightly say,im probably better off keeping it standard for now,and maybe getting a bigger setup later.

cheers

Wow, you are flying excellently for only 6 or 7 flights mate! Nice one!

I have hours on the V3 and I can't fly the V3 like that!! I can hover my Trex pretty well, but they're easier to fly IMO.

Keep up the good work!

PS: glad you're enjoying it, its a great hobby!

As far as they know, I already had it!

thanks

when i got the heli it was wandering about all over, the gws blades and the transmitter set softer around the middle of the sticks helped a lot, before you only had to look at moving the stick and it was off like an angry wasp, now it takes off straight and up and almost hovers itself in one place.
i also put 2 small alloy collets i made on the lathe on the ends of the flybar,i think thats helped slow it down a bit too.

as i said i did lots of reading on how to make them fly easier and i had a bit of time on the fms sim using a logitech dual stick anologue joypad...plus all those yrs racing buggies means your not having to learn the sticks.
