e-JR Voyager E > Did I get a good deal on a VE?

I'm relatively new to helis but I decided to replace my Sabre with a "real" heli. Here is what came installed with my slightly used VE:

Hacker C40 12T
JR G410T gyro
Futaba FP-R127DF 7ch Rx
HS-225BB servos(x3)for the CCPM
Futaba S9253 digital servo for the rudder (X1)
Phoenix 60 ESC
New pitch guage
Deans antenna
new canopy

All for $350

Questions....
1)Did I get a good deal?
2)If I can hover a Sabre for a full battery (no wind) can I hover this VE?
3)Is there anything else I should mod?
4)Will these lipos work with this setup: Apogee 3S2P 4160mah (10.5C), Kokam 3S2P 4000mah (15C) and a MaxAmps 3S2P 4200mah (15C), and Apex 3S2P 4200 (12C).
5)Which batter would be best?

Thanks in advance

Seems to be a decent deal!

It will be so much easier to hover then a smaller chopper night and day, I would say go for it.

Also any of the lipos you listed are perfect! Higher the "C" rating the more the pack can take, but any of those are prefect for the VE.

I hope it will be easier because that is why I got it. I just picked up some CF rods and 4 whiffle balls so I can fabricate training gear. It should also help ease hard landings because I got some relatively thin but strong CF rods.

I can hover nearly a full battery in the Sabre and people say that the larger VE is much easier to hover than the tiny (and cheapo) Sabre. I also fabricated a lipo battery tray from light ply and used some Trex battery straps to hold the lipos in place. Next, I have to balance the blades and trim the throws.

You might want to skip the training gear, if you can hover a micro you don't need training gear on the VE.

I think your skills are enough.

I thought about it but I think I will use the training gear for the maiden since I've never really dialed in a heli until now. I got some (actually a lot) of help from the buddy who sold it to me. Luckily, he had an identical Futabe 9CHP on his VE with the only difference being the Rx. I finished tucking all the wires neatly with zip ties making sure to seperate all the vital electronics. I hope to maiden it this weekend with the "club". I will be the only VE among the half dozen Trex's. Believe it or not, all the Trex guys were gawking at my VE mainly because they are not used to its size. It was neat being different from all the rest.

Well Since you have hovered your new VE, what did you think? More stable then a micro huh.

Glad you like the VE, they are a decent chopper and with upgrades they are real nice.

Add a set of MS 420mm Carbon Fiber main blades and the VE will Sport fly to mild 3D with ease.

Hey Jimmy..I'm glad you chimed in. I know I got a sweet deal but I just had to brag to the rest of the world what a deal you gave me. I just got back from the field with the OEM training gear and less wind. It was MUCH better. I actually hovered a full battery with no issues. It was rock steady and I even got up to over 10 feet high under full control. I'm totally hooked. I was very impressed with the bird and with my flying since it was only the second time up and my first "real" flight. I started swinging the tail left and right just to get the feel. In short, I was flying the heli not the other way around. Anyway, I'm PUMPED and now I want to get more batteries so I can get more flight time. I get around 10-12 minutes with the Apogee 3S 4160mah.

Hoverdown3k,

Yes, it is much more stable than my Sabre. I'm just more careful since replacement parts are more expensive. I just came in from a flight in the culdesac out in front of the house with more success. I particularly enjoy swinging the tail left and right and watching it snap where I want it to. Once I can hover with more confidence, I plan on getting a Trex SE. I plan to build it up slowly and take my time dialing it in all the while, improving my skills with the larger Voyager. The only upgrade I plan to do is to get a set of MS 420mm blades. So far, it is more capable than my skills especially with the Hacker motor. I just picked up a pair of Apex 2200 12C lipos so I can pair them up for the Voyager or split them for future use with a Trex.

Randys first battery pack

Good to hear from you !! I hope you put those shorter balls on yhe VE It wont occillate as much and I might turn down the gain on that 410 to 60 I dont know what you got it at now but I think you said 80 percent and after I saw you hover it the other day I dont think you will have any trouble flying it Oh bye the way sat at 5 pm I crashed my SE and bent the maain shaft the feather shaft and ground the blue set of gears plus broke the blades I figure about thirty five bucks to get it back in the air and I already have all the parts except for the gears whoich I can run down to GRYO hobbies in the morning and pick up a new set I have a set of white gears from my 450X put I am not sure I can run them Does anyone know if there are more or less teeth on the stock gear set for the older Trex or are we all paying ten dollars for the pretty blue color???? Still trying to fly in Hunt. BEACH Jimmy

Sorry to hear about the crash. At least it doesn't cost very much to get the SE back into the air. What happened? I have to be extra patient with the VE since parts are not as cheap as the Trex. While you are putting the Trex back together, you should get the VE into the air. I plan on getting a Trex SE from Rob's Hobbies in a couple of months. Hopefully by then, I will be a much better pilot and should be into forward flight. Now that I have more batteries, I should be able to get in more stick time. Hopefully, I will see you this afternoon! Cheers!

Yes I do the same thing with my packs, I run 3S 2100mah in the T-Rex and double them up for the VE, sometime I run 3 at once for 6600mah, I like the ability to use my lipos on more then one model, or having to get special larger packs for the VE.

I think the VE is an under rated chopper, but I beleive that was caused by JR, not wanting to sell just the chopper, but having to include ther ESC and motor, many didn't want, the whole kit.

JR should have just lowered the price and offer the kit only!

I just got back from testing out the two Apex 3S 2200 (12C) lipos and they worked great. I couldn't fly the whole pack at once. I had to stop, rest, then fly again. The flight time is pretty long and I expect them to get longer as the batteries break in. I may get a pair of the 3S 2100 (15C) lipos. How does the Trex fly with the 3S 2200 (12C)? Or are they best with the 2100 (15C)?

Anyway, I was getting pretty high and starting to fly the VE from the sides. I was also doing quick "pops ups". I would get into a steady hover then hit full throttle/pitch and the VE would jump to a higher hover. By the way, how can I get it to jump quicker? Increase the pitch curve? Anyway any info would be appreciated.
