| theres been a few fellows on this forum building really fast helicopters for all out speed. The FAI limits this kind of attempt to 10cc displacement, 5kg weight, 100m horizontal entry, and 200m timed course, both directions, if youre going for a record.
Thats kind of like racing at le mans with a minivan. It does not encourage many fellows to try for all out speed. officially its at 89mph, thats easily possible with many 91 powered machines today. unofficially it stands around 110 mph with a 10cc motor that was a brute, according to its owner, the speed god John Benario. Well the only successful 10cc motors so far are converted rf and sx with custom liners, porting, etc, running as high as 23k. to keep up with the jones, an os rf or sx is going to have to run higher and then it will destroy itself if it hasnt already ripped gears apart. cant go much faster than that with the given rules.
So to get around this I have been design a machine shaped like a fish, 3 inches wide and using two stage gear reduction with the clutch bell on the second pinion so the firebreather 2000 can idle (once I find a 61 that will do 3.5-4hp without destroying itself in a minute or less), and run the headspeed at 2500k.....pretty ridiculous right.
and all the other record attempts are limited to 10cc. while all these 15cc motors arent doing 110-115 mph in a speed chopper?! they easily could.
think i'll be putting a 91 in there, getting rid of the rube goldberg cr@p, and going drag racing. |
