Most probably it does not matter as the design of the tail rotor hub is symetrical, not conical. I would really favor the use of this thrust bearings.

Were the tail blades you were using heavier than the stock blades?
If they were then there was an extra load on the grips and bearings. Were you running a very high head/tail speed? I just started a flying a 50 and now you got me worried?

I am supposed to receive the thrust bearings today and i have a question on how they should be mounted. also i am using the new SUS hub, should the thrust bearing be at the top of the hub (closest to the nylon lock nut) or closest to the tail shaft?

i plan this on my new 90 ship and have not flown it yet. but i am going to use the SAB 105 blades.

The outermost bearing is the thrust bearing

this means the closest to the nylon locknut.

Rcer22 - I really wouldn't worry about the tail all that much. In all honesty the new SUS tail is a large improvement over the stock setup. That would be the first thing I would change. I haven't had any issues with the stock bearing setup. I have the thrust bearings, but they're not installed as I was trying to find some binding after a crash and just never got around to putting them back in...they weren't the problem FYI The bearings I used where PV0047. I think I paid around $15 or $20 for the set. So they were a little pricey for 2 bearings! The other ones posted at $10 a pair look a little nicer and are probably a better deal...

However, it's not a "must have" upgrade. I know tons of people with hundreds and even thousands of flights on the same set of stock tail bearings with no failures.

Also, the 30-90 all use the same tail components with the exception of how they're driven. All use the same pitch slider, fork, hub, bearings, and grips. I believe the tail cases and are different since 60/90 are shaft and the 30/50 are belt driven...also the output shaft is probably different too...but I don't know for sure, the diameter is the same though.

I just put the SUS Tail rotor hub on my 50 and my 90. Just under $6 each is very cheap insurance....

I put the PV0499 on both my 50s and a 90 a couple of weeks ago after I got a scare when discovering an aluminium hub was fractured. BTW, I replaced with new bearings. However, the other day I decided to strip the tail of one of the 50s which had only had 6 flights since the PV0499. I was horrified to find the bearings had got notchy I then found that as I looosened the 2 bolts that hold the blade grips together, the notchyness disappeared. The assumption I have drawn is that the plastic blade grips don't necessarily hold the bearings true which will ultimately lead to failure. I got on the phone pronto to QuickUK and ordered some of their new RT-11 grips as these will be garunteed to hold the bearings true. It will test tomorrow. we'll see.

i was looking at the thrust bearings as an added security especially on the 90 sized heli. after reading this thread if i can spend 10-20 more on them just to be safe or lessen the chances of this happening then i think i will be in good shape..


i am also thinking of getting this set of 60/90 "CORRECT" brand tail grips that have a lifetime warranty even if you crash and damage them

tail problem

i lost a tail blade while looping and after looking at the desaster i found that a bearing failed and came out . This is really dangerous and expensive i thing i am going to adapt the three dee nt tail (with trust bearings) on my futur raptor( if i buy a new one)
its stupid continuing flying such a bad design

I never ever experienced a problem with my Raptor tailrotors on my 2 R90's & 3 R50's.... but maybe the new batch has had some problems...

The new QuickUK tails are very nice and I will be getting a couple of those in the very near future

SUS is a code for Stainless steel, normally there is a number behind the SUS which indicate other properties of the steel.

Has anyone tried using the thrust bearings from the R30V1 head to replace 1 of the radial bearings on the V2 tail blade grips?, part number PV0047 Thrust Brg. HMX0510 d5xD10xW4 Bearing. Would these not work as a replacement for 1 of the radial bearings? , I would think they would need to also have a 1mm thrust washer as they are 1mm less width than the radial bearings.

You sure? On the Evo tail, the thrust brg is toward the hub with the radial on the outside. Also, the "tighter" fitting washer is toward the nut as well; it locates the race, and the inner ring follows suit.

Another raptor 50 tail blade grip bearing failure

Just back from flying..trying some piro flips & the tail went a bit loose on me( almost felt as If the gyro was no longer in HH.) Anyway I managed to get it in a steady inverted piro & flipped it back upright, and hit the hold.

Thourghly checked it all out.. servo/gyro tail blades/belt etc etc..couldn't see anything amiss

Fueled up again & lifted of gently..but it seemed as if the tail was still floating a little..engaged Idle up & something whizzed past my head..hit hold and down OK

The tail blade grip bearings had failed completely in one holder..the inner races are still on the hub & the outers in the retrieved grip/blade

The brgs were fully checked last week as I have just fitted a new Quick UK SUS tail hub..At least it's more or less all in one piece.
