e-Lite Machines Corona > How hot can an Astro 020 run without damaging?

Hi all,

I just hovered around with the canopy off, on 7cells for 7 minutes with ambient temps of 26'c (78'F), and after flying the temperature on my Astro 020 was reading around 52'c (125'F).

The next flight was with a 8cell pack for 9 minutes, and the same ambient conditions. Astro reading about 60'c (140'F).

Both times I measured with a temp diode ontop of the axle on the back (wire) end.

You guys think these temps are ok? Or to hot?

The machine is 1390grams (49oz.) on 7 cells and 1455grams (51oz.) on 8 cells. Both flights on 4dot grips.

What you should do is sell the Astro 020 and get a different motor (Mega 16/15/3 or a Hacker C40). Many people have reported failures with this motor with this application (including myself)it is just not up to the job for helis it seems. Even though they market it for the Corona and some people have luck with it its just not worth the risk in my opinion.

As far as the temp is concerned I cant help you there. Never actually measured mine. If it seems to hot to hold your finger on for a second or two then its probably getting to hot.

Meh, why do I always get screwed over on my purchases... If this motor has proven itself useless on a corona, shops shoulnd sell it as a combo!

Asfar as motors go, it seems there IS NO perfect motor for this thing.. They always run hot, so it seems. The Mega 16/15/3 also seems to get searing hot very often. The only motor I havent heard much about, is the hacker C40. But thats probably because its so freaking expencive, anyone who barely has a corona budget, cant afford one of those (like me).

Im clueless of what to do now, and im beginning to regret ever buying this corona.. It hovers so nice, but if the motor cant deal with it, its pointless to continue..

You dont have to worry if the motor only reaches 60 degrees celcius. I have a couple of hot setups in some planes that reach about 90 degress Celcius, but that is the limit for most motors as the windings or magnets starts to loose or get demagnetized over that point. I therefor use to make some cooling down runs before I land. In a helicopter that means to spool it gradually down (1 minute) till it stops.I would worry more about the Esc and the temperature that it develops with this setup. Especially on the 8 cell pack. If it gets hotter than about 50 degrees Celcius you should look into the setup and do some changes to cool it, because the chips are far more temperature sensitive than the motor that only got copper connections.

Wait dont get so discouraged...like I said there are people who have luck with your motor. Also, the Corona is the perfect beginner heli do not be sorry you got it actually you made a great decision. Its just the motor that has a reputation for seizing in flight. The model you have I'm sure is the upgraded version with built in heatsink (orange color with fins correct?). Supposedly this was suppose to help with that issue. I've owned both the Megas and Hackers and they both got pretty hot as well. However, they never seized on me. Just keep using the Astro. If your just learning to hover you will be fine. Even if bad luck hits and the motor does seize Corona's are meant to take abuse so try not to worry much! Just fly the thing and make sure the motor is getting adequate cooling if you decide to use the canopy. Just cut some slots into the canopy for extra cooling or fly without it on.

Iceman3: Thanks for giving me a little hope. Hearing about my choice of setup being useless got me down a bit. (Hearing that your 800 dollar investment is gonna die inevitably, isnt exactly a picnic.)

No worries about the ESC, that puppy can deal with a whopping 46A continues, and 60A peak. After a 7 minute run this ESC is hardly warm if not the same temperature as my finger. Maybe the seperate BEC system deals with this properly?

And how do you measure your motor temp? With one of those nice IR thingies? If so, where can I grab one for cheap? Ive got the idea my multimeter diode temp sensor is a little fruity.

And magnets only start deteriorating at waaaay up on 90'c? I guess I could to a quick 5 minute hover with the canopy on, and see where that gets me.

Im going to avoid the freakishly hot (+30'c) mid summer days, thats for sure. This bird will be a fall/winter/spring heli, with only some dusk/dawn flying in the summer.

If you can hold the motor for about 5-10 seconds it is fine. A little heat is not harmful as long as it is not burning hot.
