Don't need anything elaborate for this. Some people use the starters that are used for planes with a hex shaft adapter that you can buy from hobby stores made for the purpose of starting helis. I just use the hex starter shaft in my cordless Dewalt drill. Works just as great, and a heck of a lot cheaper if you already own a drill.

I just switched from a nexus with a starter cone to a Raptor with a hex. So I bought an allen wrench and cut it to go in my Craftsman drill and it works great.

you need a 6mm hex starter shaft. The one way bearing is in the bird, so do not need one in the starter shaft

Most decent starters will do fine. However if you're planning on adding a 90 to your fleet, may as well go Dynatron now

Hydratork starter!! It is the best way to go, plenty of power and you get a lot of starts between charges.

I think mine was about £60 plus £25 for the start shaft. Way too expensive

I have an old Hobbico or Sullivan starter. New ones will run you about $25-$30. I use a pair of 7 cell 3300mAh NiMH packs, wired in series which provide 16.8v. I picked the packs up from Battlepacks.com for about $34 for the pair. The combo provides enough power to start anything! As a bonus, the 3300mAh packs only need charging every 2-3 months. There are some fancy, and expensive setups out there but most any starter on 14 cells will serve you well for a long time.

edit: I use the 6mm hex start shaft from Mavrikk. It's only about $10 (compared to the $27 you'll pay for one with a one-way bearing, which isn't needed for a Raptor). It plugs firmly into the cup on the end of the starter, and in a pinch I can pull the start shaft out and use the cup to start a glow plane.
