Bergen R/C Helicopters > What's JR best gyro&servo?

I just finished my Bergen Intrepid Gas EB and have installed a JR G500T that came with a DS810 servo. I didn't like it, because it is hard to setup and cannot limit servo travel as much as I need.

I really like JR equipment and don't want to use another brand, if I can find a good gyro/rudder servo combination.

What do you guys recommend, based on you experience?
Many thanks.

Like many of us, I like JR equipment, but you cannot beat the dependability and simplicity of a Futaba 401 or 611 Gyro. IMHO you should use the Futaba Gyro.

Don

There is always enough time and money to do it right the second time!

On the EB you will finf the 401 with 9254 tail servo works as good as it gets, without the big price tag

My transmitter is a JR 9303.
Does any of you use this transmitter with a Futaba gyro?
Is there any compability issue?
thanks.

I have had many G500T your least expensive way to go would be to try the JR 8700 servo. You need to use PCM with that servo and switch the frame rate on the gyro if used. The gyro has a limit screw on the gyro, what can't you limit the travel? Chris

Chris,
the limit screw doesn't go far enough to reduce the travel where I need it. As I don't have any G500T around to compare, don't know if it has a problem on the limiter.

I notice some switches on the G500T, but the manual that comes with doesn't give any instruction how and when to use them.

Can you help?
thanks.

Have you tried using a smaller servo wheel, or moving the ball in closer on the wheel?

And/or move the ball on the pitch bellcrank out one hole.

These will also reduce the travel limits.

Chris,

Yes, I moved the ball on the pitch crank to the outside hole.
I will do the same (in opposite direction, of course) on the servo wheel.
Thanks.

Try this

I have 2 JR 490 / JR8700G set ups in a Raptor 50 and a Raptor 90 SE Good Plug and Play gyros I cant take credit for these set up notes but I used these and got a good set up real quick. I use a 9303TX (The 490,UK model is the same as the 500,US model)

I would take time to mechanically set up the tail by switching to 15% gain (non HH) in a steady hover and adjusting the tail drift to zero by adjusting the linkages - after that I just switched to HH and forgot it.
I found the JR Gyro tape to be useless and ended up with a double thickness of 1.5 mm rubber double sided tape - its stuff that I get from work that is used in car bodyshops to attach trim.

JR 500T Connections and set-up

-Plug the white AUX connector into the AUX channel you wish to use for gain
- set your tail rotor servo horn to between 16-18mm from center of rotation to ball link.
-Set rudder ATV/Travel Adjust to 150% both ways and do not adjust!
-Set Rudder dual rates to determine piro Rate. A good starting value is 55% and can be increased at pilot’s discretion. Note: start with a low setting and work up as a 100% value can be violent and blow a crown gear or cause loss of control. Make sure to set all of the stick positions for dual rate and expo! (Don’t forget to set both sides of the switch and leave one at 100% default!)
-Rudder Expo sets how hard the gyro hits. Start out with a high number (50-60%) and work up or down from there.
-Gyro gains needs to be as high as possible without wagging (if gyro wags reduce speed immediately to stop wag, land and reduce gain. See Chart for gain values!

Use the ATV Output% to set gyro to either Heading Hold or Rate Mode. Each % of output equals 2% Gyro Gain
Gyro sensitivity function is desirable to select gyro gain

Example: 85% ATV/Travel Adjust value equals 70% gyro gain is Heading hold mode. 15% ATV/Travel Adjust is equal to 70% Rate mode gain.

ATV Output % 100 100 Heading Hold Mode
90 80
80 60
70 40
60 20
50 0 0 % Gain
40 20 Rate Mode
30 40
20 60
10 80
0 100
