Bergen R/C Helicopters > Bergen Gas EB - Excessive play on Head Axle

Finally my Intrepid Gas EB was ready for the first flight, duly balanced.
Since I'm not a proficiency pilot, yet, I asked the best heli pilot of our club to check it out.
He found an excessive play on the head axle. It looks like it is missing a dampening washer or something.
I had the Assembly Manual with me and went through the assembly instructions and found out that I had installed everything as instructed.
The step for dampening 0-rings says
" Insert head axle into head block and place dampening o-ring on each end."

However, I just notice the option below is also mentioned on the
Manual, which I haven't notice when assemblying the helicopter.

" An Option you may have is the double o-ringed head. In this case, install 4 ea dampening o-rings."

I guess I didn't notice because the kit didn't come with 4 dampening 0-rings, only two.

Of course the first flight was postponed for another day.

Any one can shed some light on this?

How old is this kit. I've recently completed my build and my manual does not mention 4 orings as an option. The 4 orings are what is shown in the assembly photo and directions. Was it somewhat difficult to get the circlips installed when you put on the grips? With mine and the 4 orings, it required pressing the grips an a vise to aid assembly. If yours went together easily, you might be missing a set of orings. When installed correctly, there isn't any play in this head.
Hope that helps. With any luck, Chris'll check in again soon and clear it up for you.

I purchased it in January 2005. Started building it but was relocated back to Brazil late last year and completed the job just a couple of weeks ago.

I think it depends on how you fly and the feeling you like.mine moves back and forth alittle and slops around lot, full of grease,I like this set up for nice gentle flying.I use just one o ring stlye.

Hi Euqor,

To tell if it needs 2 O-rings, make sure when you press the O-rings in as far as you can that they are just slightly proud of the head. The shims should be tight against them. When you push and pull vertically on the blade grips it should move slightly, but not be loose.

If you have the head axle with circlips to preload the damping, the blade grips can move in and out very slightly, which is not a problem at all. Again the shims should be tight against the dampers.

Two O-rings are used to prolong the life of them, because in hard 3D they were found not to last very long and need replacing every few gallons. This isn't a problem for more gentle flying.

Nice canopy by the way

Kevin

I'm not a 3D flyer, by any chance.
But believe 1.3 mm gap is just too much. But, as usual, Chris Bergen was fast to reply the e-mail I sent to Bergen Helicopters.
I sent him some pictures showing what I am talking about.
I'm sure he will reply pretty soon with the right recommendation.
Most probably it will require 4 O-rings.

As usual, Bergen Helicopters' great Customer Services worked again.
The two O-rings are on their way from Michigan to Brazil.
Chris also noticed (based on the pictures I emailed to him) that the pitch arms were installed in the reverse way and called my attention to that.
Thanks, Chris.

Any chance of you coming to Brazil over the week-end and make a full pre-flight check on my machine?

Just to leave a note here and express my satisfaction on the way Bergen Helicopters handle their customer's needs.
The O-rings arrived here, today, express airmailed from Michigan, all the way to Brazil. South Brazil, as a matter of fact, if you take a look on the map. 7,200 miles !!!

This is what I call a great Customer Service.
Business as usual, would say the guys at Bergen . . .
