e-Quick Of Japan EP-8/10/16/18 > Question about payload lift of the QJ-8

Hi lele I'm back from lunch now..doh! ammo you beat me to it

Yes the EP-8 isnt that big, exactly why I chose it for an AP heli, as I can get away with flying it in tight spots without worrying the customer and public too much. But its extra mass over the T-rex means it can lift more and doesnt get affected by wind to such a degree.

looks like we did the best choice

I can't see the hour for it to arrive..

Thanks Ammo for the frame to frame size..but I am afraid that the R149DP
will not fit

I stuck my rx to the outside of the frame at the back, and left the bottom gallery totally clear, this way I can build a front mount camera and stick the cells in the back to counterbalance it.

I will do the same with the Rx even if my mount will be under the heli.
Wanted to ask you also if it's possible to place the gyro on the boom, in the ep-8 gallery on the site i see no plate where to fix it, but in some private galleries i have seen the gyro on the boom, is there some upgrade needed for that?
thanks

Theres a perfect GY401 sized spot ontop of the boom supports in between the frame sides, I CAed a bit of ply there and stuck my gyro into it, theres even a couple of holes in the frame that are perfect for a zip tie saftey strap.

Hi Pigs

..did you solve your glitching problems?
I am also curious to know if you did the 700 grams lift test.

Sorry not yet, I'm going to my local hobby shop tomorrow, to get a ferrite ring and a base loaded aerial.
I seem to have a tail problem too, as my tail keeps jumping, busy weekend for me

My QJ8 with Hacker A30 8XL, strapped to an even Bigger stool, at max headspeed, and full pitch drew 32.5 amps, this was with the stool again Off the Ground!
It lifted the piano stool almost completely off the ground and scooted it sideways like 3 feet! LOL
This stool weighs at least 5 to 7 pounds!
The amp draw at max headspeed is pretty good too I think, as it'll never see that kind of load in the air.
This was with a 14 pinion at 75% throttle, reaching max headspeed.
I had a mild v curve mixed in to 85% I think, the R's barely dropped until full pitch was applied.
I adjusted the tracking, now i just want a VERY experianced pilot fly it and make sure it's OK to go.

Hi guys, well I strapped 700g to the bottom of the heli, and it worked just fine, plenty of climbout and flew as if the weight wasnt there, so thats 700g, plus an extra 200g from running the 500g emolis instead of lipo bags, 900g total load.

Motor and cells came back just luke warm, I expected them to come back on fire but no, it flew about 5-6mins before the emolis dumped.

I'm very happy with the results, CCHV45, Hacker A30 8XL, 14t pinion, and 5s eMoli packs, stock 400 woodies, normal pitch and throttle curves, I can see no problems fitting a 500g camcorder and mount to the heli.

I have just got to get shot of the glitches now, tempted to go with an Rx pack instead of the UBEC as even with a ferrite ring I still get the odd big glitch now and then (todays glitch (earlier on) almost flipped the heli onto its back, heart in mouth time )

Pigs!!

thanks for sharing the test! I am so happy that finally you did it. I was waiting for your results. This is the machine! I can't believe it lifted 700+200 grams! when I will have my setup ready it will be almost like nothing for it to lift it at 500/600 grams.
The only thing I will have to find out is how it will perform with my motor since I do not have the Hacker but the Mega.

thanks again Pigs, and hope you get rid of your glitches!

Mike, thanks you also. Could you just weight the stool, so we know a max weight that has been lifted? ...but again with an Hacker...

Thanks Guys!

lele when you get your EP-8 together you will understand why it has more lift than the T-Rex, the EP-8 is kind of like a mothed version of a full sized electric.
If you keep the original flybar and paddles its super stable too and makes an ideal photo platform, plus ali everything it really looks professional if the customer wants to take a look.

What sort of mount are you going to make for it?

Pigs, I am working at an under slung mount, but even if everything is made of carbon fiber and allu as work goes on progress the mount keeps on going fat, I am not sure what the final weight will be.
Moreover I am working on the mount but, not having the heli here jet makes things a little more dificoult, will sure have to adjust it to fit properly.
Not comparable to your idea of front mount, that looks as a very interesting project. Will it be hard to balance the front weight?

Hi lele

Im thinking that the front mount should be easy to balance, I have kept the lower gallery of the frame clear of all rc etc, all I have to do is mount the bottom frame rails the other way round, and have them sticking out the back, I can then load the cells up at the back to counterbalance the camera hanging from the front. I hope

Whats the video like on the Lumix btw? Does it have any stabilisation on the video? Does it do video out for a downlink? Cheers

Did either of you end up using your QJ as a camera ship in the end?
Im thinking of having a play around using a 6.3MP Fuji A600.
I found a guy who makes mounts, and also used to own a QJ and had made a one off mount.
Its $200.
Can see a camera hanging under the QJ before the end of summer

If you bling it, they will come :D

Yep mines a camera ship with a front mount, very nice it is too, its been sitting on my shelf for nearly two months now, with the rest of my heli's waiting for the damn wind to stop blowing a howling gale......sometimes I feel like buying a kite instead...lol todays wind was gusting at 99mph...eek! I kept looking at my roof, it was making some baaaad noises.

BTW Rotorworld want me to review the EP8 shame it dont look much like one anymore

Hi gorn, yeah thats my EP-8, unfortunately Rotorworld miss quoted the emoli specs I gave them, so they will be revised in the next issue. I'm doing a Mini Titan review first so the EP-8 will be after that

Cool, I was REALLY glad to see a QJ in print.
Good job!
You really should get a Rotorworks SE chassis though, LOTS of room for any battery combo, and better electronics placement.
Still, nothing wrong with stock either, just think when upgraded they look mean

If you bling it, they will come :D
