Bergen R/C Helicopters > Question on main blade attachment - Intrepid 46

My Intrepid 46 is almost finished...I bought Mavrikk Pro 680 blades for it. I'm about to attach them to the blade grips.

Questions: what size/style bolts/nuts should I use to attach these blades? Should I insert the two washers that came with each blade on either size of the blade when I attach it? The blades came with small brass tubes to slip over the bolts. Are these needed also if the bolts have a shoulder that matches the blade root thickness?

The blade root is 13mm, which seems to match the Intrepid main blade grip size exactly.

Thanks in advance for your help.

All of the Intrepid birds use the same head. The blade grips are 14/4 (14 mm thick, 4 mm bolt diameter). You shouldn't need any washers or shims unless the blades are less than 14 mm thick. Your kit should have come with grip bolts that are partially threaded. Use those and nylon locking nuts to hold them in place.

If you're building an Intrepid 46, which is designed for a 50-class engine, then you should be using 600 mm blades. The 680 mm blades are commonly used on 60-70 class machines, and sometimes even 90-class machines. Do you have a long (60-class) tail boom on this Intrepid?

Well, the tail boom is 680mm long as it came from Bergen. The kit is an Intrepid 46 with all upgrades, which I think makes it an Intrepid 60?

Maybe I bought the main wrong blades? Engine is an OS50SX-H.

I've found two 4mm grip bolts that seem just right, but no nuts to go with'em. They have an unthreaded shoulder that seems just right for these blades.

The length of the boom is not the same as the length of a blade. I just dug through some information that I received from Chris a while back:

Intrepid 60 = 31.25" = 794 mm
Intrepid 90 = 33" = 838 mm
Gasser G23 = 31.25" = 794 mm
Gasser G26 = 33" = 838 mm
Gasser EB = 37" = 940 mm

Normal 680 mm blades are used on the 60 and G23; 720 mm blades are used on the 90 and and G26. If the tail boom on your 46 really is 680 mm (26.75 inches) then you're definitely going to need 600 mm blades.

Saying "all the upgrades" is a bit misleading. All of the Intrepids come with parts that are considered upgrades on any other model. The only upgrades for the 46 that I am aware of are driven tail, the CNC fan & hub, the pull-pull tail, and the main shaft thrust bearing block.

Hi Mike,

We got your e-mail but are having troubles with our e-mail computer and haven't been able to answer all of them.

Paul is correct, all of our blade grips are 14mm and use a 4mm bolt.

If the blades are 13 mm, then you will need shims. If the bolt fits the hole perfectly, then it is OK to use without the brass tube.

680's are definitely too long for the 46 tail boom. It is designed to use 600mm blades, possibly as high as 620's.

OK, many thanks Paul and Chris. I'll save the 680mm blades for my next Bergen kit and get 600mm blades for this one.

God Bless you both...
