e-JR Voyager E > Would it hurt my ESC and Motor?

Hi, did anyone in meanwhile find out what 'real' components the JR NHM-540BL and NHA-300BL ESC actually are ? As for me, it's a Hacker Set, whereas the motor is B40 8L or 9L, and the ESC seems to be X-30 Pro ? Not sure at all, if it's X-30 Pro, then probably it might be better to have a 40Amps or higher, already today I use ext. BEC, as it gets too hot (shut down during flight). My battery K&S 3200mAh gets actually quite hot, whereas Dualsky 4000 gold not so much.

I can't answer your question, but I replaced the ESC
with a JETI Advance Plus Heli 40. I'm currently running
it in the governor mode and am quite happy, freed from
the problem of overheating.

oh honto ni, where did you buy it ? here in Tokyo I have not seen Jeti Esc ... thanks !

I bought the ESC from Little Bellanca. You can
find one on their web site at

http://www.little-bellanca.com/shop...CA&CI=0035&MK=Y

BTW, I'm still using Nimh batteries, because I'm
still concerned about the safety of Lipos. My
Voyager flies for about 7 min to 7 min and a half
with 8 cell 3700 Nimhs. That's more than enough
for the moment, considering my skill level.

Hi again, in meanwhile I have got a new ESC, bought it in Akihabara, it's called Cassiopeia, at runs really nice. Now as this ESC can do 4S (14.8V, don't know about NiMH, maybe 10 cell), do you have any experience how the motor reacts to it (NHM-540BL) ? Already now I use extra cooler, but 4S might melt him Thanks !

Sorry but I can't tell for sure. The highest voltage I have
ever used with the motor is 12V ( 10 cell NiMHs ) The motor
sure gets hot after 4 or 5 minutes of mild hovering.

Looking forward to hearing the result of your test flight.

Hi, well it's getting quite hot already while hovering with 3S, point is, that I currently still don't know what motor it is, and also the shop does not know. Actually from the size point of view, it is exactly B40 "S" Series, but I don't know 8S,9S, ... ,12S

http://www.hackerbrushless.com/motors_b40constants.shtm

When I turn it by hand, I can feel a very light snap 8 times for 360deg turning, can I assume, it's then B40 8S ? ANybody knows ?

In case it is B40 8S, then KV is 5325, and the real gear ratio of voyager is 23.33, so if I use

11.1 Volt (no load), then I get HS 2534
14.8 Volt (", 3378

So I know, that I never get 2534, maybe 10% load to be added

11.1 Volt HS 2280
14.8 Volt HS 3040

So 2280 is reasonable, over 3000 for sure isn't. Ok, no need to run full headspeed, but ... is this going to be broken soon ? Anyone experience ?

Thanks a lot !

Hi,

According to some RC magazines available in Japan,
the JR brushless motor's KV is 3,600.

Oh only 3600 ? that is not a lot really, that would give (using 17T, and 10% load factor) with 14.8V a HS of 2300, which is still fine, same with 11.1 would be 1750, I am just aftraid, that the motor is getting too hot ... but for sure I will try (bought a B40 cooler now !).

Thanks a lot Akira !

My pleasure, Xircom,

I am only very slowly learning
to hover nose-in at the moment,
but I'm very interested to learn
what you find from your VE.

Looking forward to your next post.

Me too I have to find time, of course the more time you have also the more time you can fly - and the more you fly, the more experience you have. As for the voyager, we all know, that it has not been initially designed to perform acrobatic flight, in fact it has been designed as cost-effective entry solution for all those who have standard servo, as well as existing NiMH batteries from RC cars or elsewhere, also the spares are very affordable. And at the end of the day, the heli has quite a big size, so that it's stable to fly.

Soon there has been all sort of upgrades available, starting from Brushless Set over many carbon and alu. parts to make it stronger (K&S and Quick), but upgrading a single part is just soon followed by others as well, so that in my case there is very few original parts only - but even if you upgrade almost everything - still it does not reach the level of today's 3D machines like Lepton or TRex for sure, in my opinion. For example the gear ratio is quite high, so that even you take a small pinion gear, you still need a high KV motor to make the headspeed big enough not to wobble around when it's getting close to end of battery. That was reason of my last crash, then I realized that it's much better to use governor function to avoid this. Althogh the orgiginal JR Brushless Set (NHA 300BL) is quite ok (actually I bought it because it was cheap in the set together with the heli, also the alu motor holder is otherwise difficult to get), the governor could be much better still, so I ended up to buy another ESC with a nice governor.

Having this nice ESC now, being able to handle 4S battery and strong upgrades all over the place, soon the wish of more power (and efficiency) comes up as well, and so I am wondering if I have to change the motor as well for this. The motor seems to be B40 8S, and that is probably a problem for 4S, I haven't seen that combination recommended anywhere so far. Maybe I will try after buying the offical Hacker B40 cooler, and set the governor on an acceptable level.

Ultimatively I also have decided to buy a lepton now, which I am sure will help me to the next level (e.g. inverted), which I am fine only on Reflex so far. This is why I have decided to make the best out of the existing VE, use the stability and solid flight ability and nice size to add the Bell 230 cabi, just recently also bought some remote controlled lights, which will be a pleasure to see.

So that is the story, and in case anyone hanging around once in Tokyo, let me know, always looking forward for tricks.

Today tried out the 4S, the motor gets hot, very hot - although I have mounted the B40 original cooler, even the frame gets hot, and the motor starts also to smell a bit strange, I think it's not a good idea to use 4S, although of course it's very nice and powerful feeling.

Any recommendations for another motor with similar rpm but possible to run on 4S ?

Thanks !

So definitely I need a new motor. Saw Kontronik Twist 33, seems to work well also on 4S, also I saw that one : Hyperion YH22 (see for example http://aircraft-world.com/shopexd.asp?id=3667), what do you guys think ? Of course I am talking about the 3280rpm/V version ...
