Scale Model RC Helicopters > Weapon of choice for cutting fiberglass

I was just wondering, I notice that alot of Vario fuses come without the windows and doors cut out. So my question is how do you guys go about cutting out this material and what is your weapon of choice?

Thanks

Weapon of choice..

Pull out your trusty Dremel with good cutting disc, and other neat accessories of your choice.

My reason for asking

Heli_Gal,

What kind of results do you get? My experience so far with cutting fiberglass ( cowls etc) hasnt been too good. This is one of the reasons I was leaning toward a Graupner kit instead of a Vario. The Graupner fuses are cnc cut and the glass is absolutly flawless.

Xacto Hot Knife

If you don't like the dremel method, Xacto makes a soldering iron type hot knife that works awesome. It uses standard #11 blades and cuts through fiberglass like butter. I use it especially for applications that require the line to be fine enough that you have to also use the piece that you cut out (such as retract gears doors or parts like that). You can get them at any hobby shop that carries Xacto and I think they run about 16 bucks.

I like using the Dremel with the #561 cutting bit. This is the one that resembles a drill bit but is fluted to run sideways through material like a Roto-Zip does. I make sure to stay away from the line a little ways. I then dress up the opening in the fiberglass with a set of multi shaped mini files. This can be done with a magnifying glass to get real sweet openings with a rolled edge instead of a sharp one. I also use the little emery boards that are available at most hobby shops (the ones that are sandwiched with foam in the middle).

Hope this helps,

Later

VARIO part # 11/29 costs about $16

The Widia disc cutter is ideal for cutting clean-edged openings in GRP fuselages. The shank fits any mini-electric drill. For cutting window openings you should prepare the corners with the hole cutter beforhand, otherwise there is a danger of over-shooting the lines.

Thanks for all your input

All thanks for the help, now I am not so intimidated by the Vario kits. Now the hard part is deciding on which to buy, a bell 230, ec-135 or a Graupner NH-90. So many choices so little funds.

Thanks again

Has anyone tried the Vario Dremel type grinder that hooks to the vacuum cleaner and is driven by vacuum. Looks like a clean idea.

On my Vario fuses I use a cutting disc. My corners I pre drill and round out with a sanding drum for the desired diameter.

cutting fiberglass

A Dremel tool works great however, at least wear a dust mask as the glass and fiber matt can be hazardous to your health if you breath in the dust from cutting

dsweatt,

I like the idea of the replaceable standard #11 blades feature.

Are you sure Xacto makes a hot Knife? I could not find it on

Cat# is ZX73780 and price is $16.95.
Click here to order one online...I have several of them and they really do work very well for cutting out doors and stuff on fuses.
