HIROBO X-spec - Freya - Sceadu - Shuttle > EVO 90 Head Broke In Flight

During my third flight yesterday I got a big surprise in the middle of a nose first hurricane my EVO 90 tail kicked out violently and then began pirouetting. I flicked into hold and auto'd down. I had thought I had set it down perfectly only to watch it explode after touchdown! Me and a buddy of mine were trying to diagnose what had happend to cause the tail problem when we found that the tail blades were completly broken off. One side had about 1/2" and the other side had about 1" of tail blade left. After further investigation we found that the plastic head yoke had broken IN FLIGHT which caused the head to pitch backward, right into my tail blades! When I autorotated down the crack had widened enough to allow the head to swing right into my tail boom and cause a boom strike on landing. After I got home I pulled the stock yoke off the ship and found that it had cracked completly across both sides of the yoke. The crack had started from the dampener hole and ended just below the blade grip. I will get a picture up here tonight to show the exact spot of the crack.

I just did a search and saw the post you are referring to (I think) here. My crack is in the exact same place except it broke all the way through the yoke.

Are we asking too much of the Freya Evolution? I am running just over 7 degrees cyclic with a well tuned Y.S. 91. I do have 530 flights on this model and I do overhaul it and make sure everything is smooth and nothing is coming loose.

Yep except mine broke on both sides and the crack isn't nearly that wide. I am running the stock 60d dampeners.

Well I don't know. I may get the metal yoke for my Avant and move the plastic one to my Freya. It just broke nothing I could of done to prevent it and I don't want it to happen to my Avant.

Actually...WreckRman2's yoke cracked all the way through also. Iam starting to get worried about flying mine more now I first saw this problem in a post about installing CX dampeners into the evo 90 head yoke. It is interesting that it cracked in the same place just installing the dampners!

bparro,

That is why we took the CX EVO-90 V2 dampeners out of the online store. We had had several reports of the STOCK rubber dampeners breaking the yoke and we didn't want to start getting blamed for that and have people thinking that it was our dampeners breaking the yokes.

The issue is related some yokes being weak somehow. I'm sure Jeff Green is taking care of this issue.

Augusto.

Added pictures. This head has over 500 hard flights on it. I have replaced the dampeners three times with stock dampeners and didn't see any sign of fatigue previous to the failure.

After taking mine apart it was indeed cracked all the way through... I bit the bullet and bought the $95 aluminum yoke and the carbon extreme 3d dampners.

Hmm, it looks weak around the dampener area, needs to be beefed up. Getting the metal one would be the safest option.

That is nice looking . I think I will get one for my Avant. I want my Freya to be as close to stock as it can be. That's the whole point for me since it is strictly for practice.

We have mentioned this topic to Hirobo, but as of today, we have only received two yokes. Those in the states, please send in yours if you had a problem. We will either replace it for you at no charge or offer the metal upgrade at a discount just for your peace of mind if necessary.

For me to help further, I need those parts in question to send back to Hirobo for inspection and improvement if necessary.

Anyone that has a problem from this part will be taken care of. Do not hesitate contacting us. All reports are taken seriously and investigated.

So far the reports are isolated. While RR is a great resource, contacting a MFR or agent, like us, about a problem like this is your quickest way to get a problem resolved.

Good thing someone sent me this thread, I had not seen it over the past few days. I should have seen it. I am sorry I missed it. If someone had called sooner, it would have been answered sooner.

In the future, please contact me at jeff@modelrectifier.com, 732 225 2100 ext 230 or pm through here. Please post your questions here, but at the same time, reach out. We are here to help and welcome the opportunity to do so.

I take this stuff seriously and not lightly.

Thanks!

Jeff

Hey Jeff, I'll gladly send you mine for inspection but I've already upgraded to the metal yoke. I'll gladly take a free Hirobo TShirt instead of a discount though.
