e-Century Hummingbird - Swift > HB Elite FP + Auto Gear?

I always thought Autorotation is just after the motor stopped the main blades will keep turning and slow down the drop kind of "break the fall".

I just read the article in the newest RC Heli magazine and it says there is no way to do Auto in a FP bird.

The pilot would need to give a negative pitch in order to revo up the main blade and reverse the pitch just before the bird hit the ground and "break the fall".

My question is if I put the auto gear in the Elite FP, would it help at "all". I thought at least by letting the main rotor keep on turning it will slow down the drop. I'm confused and please help!

Thanks in advance.

that's right. auto is just for CP birds. the theory is you can build up or retain some of the kinetic energy in the blades by giving negative pitch on descent.

then, as you get near the ground (say 2-5' or so) you apply positive pitch and use what energy is left in the blades to create enough lift to land.

you can actually perform perfect landings in auto...it is not *just* a 'soften the landings' tactic. if it were, nitros would be a lot more expensive to own (due to flameouts, autos are one of the first maneuvers nitro pilots must learn----by choice, or by force)

if it ain't broke…break it.

Okay, Thanks Cuda. Have you tried it yet?

Also, sound like there is nothing I can do for a FP? Will the auto gear help in any way?

have i tried an auto? only from about 10 feet with the maxir. it was ugly, but nothing broke (3dpro's CF blades are too light to hold any K.E.)

as for FP, i'm not sure but i think it'd be a bad thing. in FP you use motor speed to control altitude. if you put on an auto gear, you'll just be hampering your ability to control the bird's descent.

if it ain't broke…break it.

Garage_flyer,
I too have learned more about autorotation. As far as the FP hummer goes I used the auto gear to help relieve any stress on the motor when stopping suddenly ,also help the blades in those little hits. Autorotation works great on gassers. My brother-in-law Mark has an instructor that takes Mark's Raptor50 up high almost out of sight and hits the auto switch and glides the Raptor down to a soft landing. I guess Jeff (intructor) was at the flying field last week just talking about autorotation. He tried on a Trex ,it was not pretty ,but landed without damage. So I guess it's not as easy on a Trex or as Cuda stated on the maxir.

yep...it has everything to do with the spinning mass of blades. a .90 will auto beautifully. these little guys like the trex don't have enough mass in the blades to keep them spinning fast enough for the flare. so, your trex with plastic blades will auto better than one with CF blades....but, still not great.
