Given the current mainstream technology, what is the feasability of having a .45 - .60 size scale electric heli with an 8 - 10 minute flight time? This assumes no 3D, and a standard Funkey- or Century- style fuse. I don't have any experience w/electric, so I'm wondering what those who HAVE had experience think.

Hi Tazcat,
I'm building a Graupner 60 size Jet Ranger with the Elektro 60 mechs. It uses Graupner's 3300-7H motor (30 cell 36volt) and their MOS 60 controller. It's a new venture for me, but I'm really looking forward to flying this little darlin. I've seen vids of 3D and scale, and after glow and gas birds, this will be a "clean" scaler for sure.
If you'd like some pics, send me an email and I'll be glad to show ya where I'm at so far.

I fly a Vario Bell 222 with electrics (30 cells) and with moderate (Scale like) flying get 7-8 minutes. And this is with Sanyo 2400mAH cells. I guess with the new GP3300 10 minutes must be possible. It's great to fly an electric scale chopper: no mess and great sound.

Thanks for the replies. Are those brushless motors you're using? If so, what's a typical cost for a motor & controller?

I wouldn't want a total dog of a machine, but not having to clean all the oily crap off the model is very appealing .

Brushless motor is the way to go. If you think cleaning up nitro grease is bad, wait until you try to clean a heli covered with brush dust.

Brushless motor/controller combo for 30 cell size setup will probably run around $400 or so. But they will not wear out.

Most heli controller comes with build in speed governor. So it's like buying a Futaba GV1 along with the engine, which bring the cost closer between nitro and electric power.

I fly my Bell 222 with a brushless setup from Plettenberg/Schulze and am very pleased with it. It cost me around $500. A brushed setup wil still cost a nice amount (about 300 to 400) and your flighttime will reduce by appr. 15 % (that's easily 1 minute) due to lower efficiency. Also when flying alot it will eat brushes

Thanks to all for the info & links. I have a couple more questions - Is motor heating an issue? My thought is that you can swap out battery packs to keep on flying, but does the motor need to cool down between flights, or is that not a limiting factor? Also, what about RF interference - I would think brushless would be better than the brushed, but still you have high-current pulses near the receiving equipment. Are preventative measures needed?

I recently put my Joker into a Century .60 sized Hughes 500D. It uses the brushless Actro 24-5 motor. On 30 cell CP2400 batteries I get about 5-6 mins of flight. The motor has a lot of power. After a flight the motor is only warm so no need for cool down.

I'm going to try CP3600's. I expect to get another couple of minutes out of it.

I have an Eco8 with brushless power in a Jet Ranger that has been flying great. I am getting about 9 mins. on 10 CP2400s. The fuse has been heavily detailed and looks great in flight.
The combo I use- Hacker B50-15L, Schulze 18.46K, and all Alu, Carbon tuning parts. MS main and tail blades. The motor gets warm, not hot.

Eric, I'm a bit skeptical. I've got a B50-15L in an Eco8. I use both 3000 NimH and CP2400 10 cell packs. The 3000's are much better in duration and tops I get is maybe 7.5 minutes. Just pod & boom.
I've tried it with both the Schulze 45Ho and an Actronic. I think I get a bit longer flights with the Actronic.

I'm trying to remember what pinion I'm using... I think it's 17T, maybe 16T.

Hi EDG, First off, I love your scale 500 Joker!
Yea, I couldn't believe it either. But my timer doesn't lie.
I get about 10.5 mins in the pod and boom, and 8.5 to 9 with the Ranger.
I don't do alot of hovering though, most of my flying is in FF. Timed hovering yeilded 6 to 7.5 mins with the fuse on.
I am using the 17t pinion, non-gov mode and a really mild -1 neg pitch. The heli will fly FF with around 1/3rd collective stick. So I'm not using any power at all to keep it going. I have spent alot of time setting it up to fly this way.
I like scale and FFF, and not into 3D at all.
Keep in mind also, this was with pretty new batts, maybe 10 flights on them. I am noticing a slight drop as the batts get older.

Oh, that might explain it. I usually time a hover. Even in normal flying a do a circuit stop to hover and admire it then keep on flying. Still, the best I EVER got on the Eco was maybe 8 minutes with the Jeti 30/3 and 40-3P with 10 cells.

I used to get 9 mins plus on the Joker just hovering. But, that was when the packs were new. Stupidly, I broke up the packs and went to solderless power tubes and have never got the same flight times.

Thanks for the Joker comment. It's really great in that fuse. Last weekend I got the kinks out and it flew great. When I timed a pack it was almost 6 minutes which I'm pretty happy with. That motor looks pretty tiny in that fuse at it's pretty amazing that it can keep about 12 lbs in the air for 6 mins with good power.

best hover-time was almost 11 mins from takeoff to landing
on topped-off 45 °C warm battery pack

a good average is 9 to 10 mins depending on the way I move the chopper around ... no extensive FF yet since I'm still learning...

motor and controller don't become noticeably warm even after two packs of electric fuel
