Aerobatic 3D Contest > Rolling Circles the trick

What's the trick?

a) positive pitch and a bit of left rudder then
b) down to the middle of the travel, no rudder and a bit of down elevator then
c) negative pitch and a bit of right rudder and then
d) back to the center on the left stick and a bit of up elevator but this time with a bit of up elevator

It's sort of like going up and down in a slightly diagonal line with the left stick.

Anyone has other techniques they might want to share?

I have found that I really have to coax my Raptor through them if I start using collective to get it around the circle.

I steer primarily with the elevator, and mostly only use rudder for big corrections when it gets really off track. I think the 'perfect' technique would use equal amounts of both. I find myself using small amounts of rudder more and more for minor corrections, but as far as I can tell, it's just going to take a lot of practice to get a 50/50 balance between rudder and elevator inputs.

I did my first circles with rudder only, but I didn't really consider myself competent until after I heard about the elevator steering technique - that made for a quantum leap in my ability.

Use both, or all three!!

Freestyle, you hit it right on the head!!

I am just about ready to take the PPP Level IV test (IRCHA) and the four rolling circles are part of it.

Rolling right clockwise circle
Rolling right counter clockwise circle
Rolling left clockwise circle
Rolling left counter clockwise circle

There is no doubt that using all the controls helps make it look smooth. I mainly use the elevator and rudder for everything but the Rolling right counterclockwise. It seems like that one is really easy!!

I really wise pilot told me one time
