Here is a picture of another project....What was I thinking?!?!?

I was sifting through old pics and came across this one... it's good for a laugh.

It was not the best of ideas. I decided that I needed more forward speed, so I bolted this mess together. I started with a Schluter Junior 50. Shoehorned in a Rossi 65 . This is a big engine. Added a Hughes 500E fuselage. Apparently I was lacking in intelligence because I then strapped a ducted fan unit on the side! Not such a good idea. It was a Kress 25 sized fan unit with K&B 21 with nitro pipe. Well it did fly fast, but was really hard to fly, especially with the DF engine running (duh...no kidding). I'm sorry that I don't have video of this mess in the air. It seems noone was willing to stick around and risk watching.

LMAO!

Yep, you weren't thinking.

So does it have vertical performance or what? Strap another DF to the other side to balance it out.

Now if ya just put 2 DF's on it or put the df under it in the middle...it might fly better

Is it a bird, is it a plane, No it's Eric's Chopper !!

Eric,

What a bird, what an idea, How on earth did you dream that one up?

Were you considering starting some sort of model heli speed challenge?

What did it sound like with the DF running?

I bet it was really difficult to control, did it fly straight with the DF hanging on one side?

Sounds like fun to me !!!

Regards,
Peter.

Crazy ideas

Hi Peter

Yes, it did want turn left when the DF engine was running, but it was still flyable. It was a bit off balance to the right side of the chopper, but that didn't seem to be too much of a problem, either. I had this DF unit sitting around and thought I'd try it to see if I could boost the straight line speed for drag racing. I don't think it made too much of a difference, but it sure was fun trying! It made quite a racket too, with the Rossi 65 turning NHP 550's and the little K&B 21 screaming away. It was a >bit< overpowered, the Rossi could turn the 550's at speed with about 14 degrees of pitch.

Kinda ridiculous....but fun!

Flight Charactoristics

Hi Eric,

It wasn't too bad then, I am a little surprised, as I thought that the blades wouldn't be able to keep up with the power of the DF.

It certainly appeals to my sense of humor, as I have often thought about what it would be like strapping a turbine or a DF onto a heli, or maybe even 2 of them !!!!!

Well, if they'll have you believe that it is possible to do that sort of thing, I can think of 1 TV Program that has already been mentioned in this thread that has that sort of thing. It might be worth trying to proove the theory, for the entertainment value if nothing else !!!

You may have guessed by now, I also like hair brain ideas !!!

Great job !!!

Regards,
Peter.

Must make video.
Must make video.
Must make video.

We should talk to Garrett Turbines and Hughes and build the real thing!

I am going to bolt 2 EDFs to the bottom of my Hawk 30 tonight!

Too cool!

Video will be fun. How much this "turbo" cost? I think this is very expencive.I think it cost as much as a new chopper.

df mess

I hate to let everyone down, but I don't have any pics or video of this thing flying. I flew it a few times (several years ago) and decided that I was really asking for it as it was pretty hard to control , so I dismantled it and sold the parts.

I'm glad everyone has gotten some mileage out of the pics, though.
