Balancers are recommended but not absolutlely essential when you're first getting into using lipos.

The Triton does have the ability to discharge, but if you're talking about lipos I'd say you only need to discharge if you're putting a battery into storage for more than a week or 2. (Then you should store a lipo at 50% charge). For the other battery types (nicad and nimh) you may use the discharge function more often...

Really? Do I NEED to discharge my batteries if stored for more than a week or two? I have NI-MH and LIPO both.

With lipos- if you plan to store them for more than a month, storing them between 30 and 60% charge is best. (Lipos age more quickly if fully charged so they will last longer if stored only part charged). It's not hyper-critical that you have exactly 50% charge in the battery for storage- so just go and fly, and then put back only a half charge. (With a dumb charger, just stop it half way through the charge, ie after 30 minutes if charging at 1C). Again if it turns out you left the battery for 6 weeks at full charge, dont panic! This is just about trying to get the maximum life time out of the battery, an extra week of storage isn't going to suddenly kill it!

Nicads and nimhs I store discharged, so I can give them a full charge and then use them while they're still warm.
