I am really surprised to find myself asking this question (being in RC for 38 years) but I am breaking in a .34 heli engine and I have forgotten everything I knew about flying planks. What size prop should I use on this engine?

If you take something apart and put it together, enough times, eventually you will have two of them.

Break in prop

I don't think it's real critical. I'd try a 9/5or6 or a 10/4or5. Either should load the engine OK and provide cooling. If it's a non-ring ( ABx) don't go too rich. It needs to heat up to near normal temp to break in sucessfully.

Having said that, I usually break in on the heli, resorting to the bench only if the engine is not running right.

Good luck either way.

I thought I would also be able to break it in on the heli but I was having a heck of a time setting the mixture. It would change drastically by the day. Usually the engine would sag just as I start a climb out. I would bring it back and richen the main needle some more (engine was extremely hot) and then it would act OK. It would be too late to go the field so I would put it away. Next day I think I am ready to go to the field and darned if it doesn't still have the same problem. I have changed plugs (many times), changed tanks and fuel line, removed the carb and looked for crud. Muffler is OK. After three weeks of this frustration I totally tore this heli apart and it has now become an organ doner for my other three. I set the engine (an ST34 ringed ABC) on a test bench and it runs pretty good but is noticeably difficult to get into four cycle mode. Needle is out so far I don't even count the turns. I was using the only prop I could find which was an 8x 6-1/2. I thought that might be a little small. Compressioin is improving, so it may be needing this bench run.

thanks,
Richw

a 10x4 or a 9x8 would be perfect.
My two cents

By then, it's probably too late...

Steve,

do you mean it may have had too lean a run for too long?

My advice would be to just run it a bit on the rich side int he heli for a few flights then when it is running nice lean it out. I have run heli engines in on the bench before just cos i was boared I used a 10x6 on both a 32 and a 36 with good results.

RichW,

Yessir, that's exactly what I mean. Or not lean enough, if it's an ABC. But I think that ST is ringed, yes?
