I use an Apache 2500 charger and my auto jump start box. Makes a great field charger.

I use an Electrifly PolyCharge4 and a 12V/80A-H deep discharge battery I got second-hand from a friend. This will keep you going all day

The hobbico MKII is cheap and works great. You can find it at tower for $49. Nothing fancy, here, but a good all around charger.

I would go with the poly 4 since both of you will need to be charging more then one battery at a time.

MKII

RobRoy is right. The hobbico MKII is cheap and works great. Charges two batterys at a time. one for you and one for your brother while you fly. For 50 bucks get two

The poly 4 is awesome - I would go with it - you'll never out grow it and it chargers up to 4 batteries at once - you can dial in the exact charge current - up to 3 Amps!

Poly 4 only charges lipos

Murp, The poly 4 only charges lipo. The MKII will charge anything That you can buy or build a connector for. I use my MKII to charge my ni-cadd starter for my Traxxas T-Max, My JR 8103 Radio, NImh for my Blade, Lipo for my T-ReX.

What is the brand of your 12V/80A-H deep discharge battery? That I am interested in.

I own the MKII but it will only charge Lipo's at up to 1 amp max so if you also have a Trex say with 2100 mah lipo packs it could take a long time to charge. My AstroFlight 109 is a much faster charger. Since Blades don't use much more than a 1000 mah lipo the MKII will work. It's a very versitle charger as I top off or fast charge my nitro helis NMH and NiCad rx packs between flights and or my TX too if needed.
I have also found that the full charge voltage on Lipo's with the MKII is about 12.20 volts ,while my Astro 109 is 12.60. Maybe it's different now as mine is over a year old.
It's a good charger for fast field charging NiCads and NMH batteries and just ok for Lipo's.
The poly 4 sounds interesting for the money but I know nothing about it. Does it have a readout on how much current your putting to the Lipo? Or is it just a dial number?

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly better than I can pilot them

Turbo has a good point.

I had forgotten about that 1 amp limit. That explains alot about my T-REX batteries. They are the cheap 1800 mah red brick units as part of the rc-experts combo kit. I noticed the charge takes a while but they never even get warm. I had the dial turned up to 1.8 but Turbo's right, it's only charging at 1Amp

I just ordered two lipos for my blade this weekend. They are those eflight 1300 mah for 20 bucks each at Helidirect, so it looks like the MKII is under powered for my up coming Lipo needs.

The Poly 4 is $99.00 at Tower Hobbies.
I think I will get out of this chair and head to my hobby shop. They probably carry the Great Planes Poly 4.

Man, I learn something every day from Runryder and all the good people who post here.

Cyclicpitcher, my 12V/80Ah battery is made by Johnson Controls. I got it from a friend, I am not sure where he got it. But if you search the web I am sure you can find something like it or better.

Murp, is that like a RV/Car type battery? What do you charge it with?

I bought the Poly 4 today at my LHS for $93. It's a nice charger, I will still use my MKII but the Poly 4 will be for all my flight packs.

Curious to know how you like it. Sounds great for the money. It will charge up to how many cell lipoli's? Also after a charge can you tell us what the resting voltage is of the fully charged pack[3 cell]is?
Thanks and good luck with it!!

Poly 4

Just pulled a pack off the charger. I flew my Heli for about 14 minutes and I took the pak out to let it cool. Once it was cold I put the pak on the charger, around one hour later it completed. The battery is a no-name red brick from Rc-expert. 11.1V 1800mah, the battery is cold and the standing voltage now is 12.49 volts

The manual says it will charge 1 to 4 cell, charge current 300mah to 3000mah It's not as big as the pictures make it look and it has a metal case.

Is the 12.49 ok or would that be considered over charged? Since I am new to lipos I have a lot to learn. What is the balancing thing I have to buy next?

cyclicpitcher,

My battery is meant as a back-up battery, and it is a deep cycle battery. RV/Marine batteries are also deep cycle and so should work fine and would come in some pretty good A-H ratings. You can charge them with a 12V lead acid battery charger (like a car charger) but charge on the lowest setting, check Johnson Control website for tips on dealing with these types of batteries. I use an auto shut-off car battery charger on the lowest charge current setting.

Backup!

Murp, so you use the Johnson controls battery as your charging source for the field and you trickle charge it at home. Is it heavy? I could see making some kinda two wheeler tool box sort of thing with all the parts that you could put in the back of the minivan
