Aerobatic 3D Contest > How to learn the inverted fly?

I am going to learn the inverted fly, but I would like to know what is the setup for this aerobatic moment? What is the pitch and throttle curve look like? and do anyone use the Remote's invert switch?

Bascially, I have some information from the Natescape's web, which suggest not to use the invert switch. But in fact, by using the switch, it will be much easier for the direction control.

Thx a lot

Basically the setup for the pitch curve looks like a "/" where;

low stick = -9 degrees
midstick = 0 degrees
full stick = +9 degrees

This means normal hover occurs around 3/4 stick and inverted hover is around 1/4 stick.

As for the throttle curve, it should look like a "V" where

low stick = 95 to 100%
mid stick = 50 to 60%
full stick = 95 to 100%

I don't think the invert switch is still in vogue as there will be problems doing maneuvers with it. I think you can hover inverted with it, but little else (no inverted forward, backward flight).

Thx Dave_D.

Do I need to revese the pitch curve? i.e. when I lower the throttle stick, the inverted helicopter will decline down and push up the stick, the heli will be moving up. Because it is quite strange that the throttle stick is reversed also, or it is the way to learn the inverted flight?

Martin,
That's the reason why there are something call flight mode.. ie: Normal , idle up 1 and Idle up 2

so when you are switching to idle up 1 or idle up 2 the programming of your pitch curve and your throttle curve will be different from your normal flight mode. Thus when you switching your transmitter switch to idle up 1 or idle up 2 , when you lower your throttle stick the engine will be going faster and faster in speed and the pitch curve will be in negative pitch instead of positive in Normal mode, that's why when you are in inverted position you have negative pitch to keep the from falling, when you lower the stick more the helicopter will hover higher and when you are raise the throttle stick helicopter will decrease in altitude..
Therefore, when your are ready for inverted you have to switch your transmitter to idle up 2. that's what dave had just mentioned.. you have to program your curve in your radio and make up it's active. NOT inhibited when you are ready. Hope that helps..
Have fun

I run my setup:
Normal: -5,5,+10 1450rpm
Idle Up 1: -10,0,+10 1750rpm
Idle Up 2; -9,0,+9 1650rpm

Thank you so much.

i.e., besides the flight mode, I have to very familiar with all the sticks in all the directions. Maybe I need more time to prastice from my computer before going out.

Learning Inverted Flight

Hi Martin,

Regarding the set up numbers, my "beginning" setup numbers are;

Low: -6
Mid: 0
High: 10

Mind you, this is for "beginning" invert flight and using Flight Mode 1.

Now......regarding the "Inverted Switch"...when I first started, I was attempting to use the Invert Switch but as Dave_D mentioned you will have some trouble making your manuvers look smooth. You can fly inverted using the switch but when you start getting more involved with RC helis, "Switchless" is the only way to go.

Switched Inverted is not really used anymore.......(I think)

Good Luck to you.

Gyroman, what do you use the 2 idle ups for, they look very similar. I had someone help set my radio up last year that same way but did all my flying in idle up 1. So whats the difference?

There isn't a difference between Idle Up 1 and 2. Some people use Idle Up1 for aerobatics and Idle Up 2 for 3D inverted flying. But there is really no need for that so a 3D set up for Idle Up 1 will be fine. There is no need to have Idle Up 2 set-up. What I do though, is make sure Idle up 2 is an exact copy of Idle Up 1 so if I do accidentaly go to far and flip into Idle Up 2 by accident, it won't affect anything, Such as the engine going down to idle while inverted, not good

I fly idle2 most of the time for the same reason, even if I do flick it by mistake, I will probably hit idle 1 first and it's nearly the same as idle 2.

I use idle1 to play around with the proper settings for 1/4 and 3/4 stick.

In my case, my pitch curve on idle2 now looks more like a backward Z than a straight / because I have set 1/4 to -7 and 3/4 to +7 degrees, makes rolls easier than a typical straight symetric pitch curve of -9 to +9.

Also, I also have different PMIXes on idle1 and 2, idle 1 only has elevator -> throttle, while idle 2 has both elevator and aileron adding throttle.

what dave_d described is a linear pitch curve setup which is very good for switchless inverted flying .. this is the setup I use too ..
