Cheers, my favourite section is the underside, lot of work went into that, trouble is most won't see it !!!!

Been masking the nose section ready for the black paint.

Also the locator stripes on the side, once it stops raining I'll paint them.

Hi

Been slow this week, little more done, awaiting some decals.

In the meantime I've modified the blade roots of my vario blades, they were the 920mm set which come with an angled root, well the Huey has a nice solid square root so using an old Raptor woodie for the profile I added a fillet.

Making sure I used some small carbon pins to add a bit of extra strength, but being careful not to drill deep and weaken the root. (Holes only about 2mm max depth)

Filled , primed

And scale panelling added.

I've also added a trim tab and tie down loop on the tip as per full scale, currently in painting.

Just working on scaling up the blade grips, more to come soon.

You never cease to amaze me with the detail you add. I sure expect to see that bird on the cover of a magazine when you finish it up.

Heliraptor,
Can I ask you where you get your scale references ? I have quite a bit of scale doucumentations myself but not as nearly comprehensive as yours.
Thanks.

Hi Willis

All collected over the past two years from the net. With the LM Huey you also get a CD of images. I was lucky enough to make good contact with the people who restored the Huey I modelled mine after who also supplied me with loads of images.

Cheers

Thanks Lee,

Looks like I'll have to be just as patient as you and look all over the net. I have found some already so will just have to keep looking. Thanks and good Luck !!

p.s. Are you going to put the scale rotor head on ?

That huey is absolutely awesome, hoe do you make those indentations in the panels for the clasps/openers?

Hi Willis,

Yes eventually I will do, I haven't flown it with the full scale head yet, plenty of time with the flybar so I may go straight on with it.

Felix, the panels are simulated using thin styrene card, cut out and glued on etc.

I have continued to work on the rotor blades, have painted the tips, and top side with the green / white section. Also finished the blade grip modifications, didn't want to go too mad, just enough to simulate the full scale Huey.

To start with I modified the upgraded Benzin grips with the ridges, buy filling in the ridges with light balsa and sanding to smooth it out.

I then added the rotor grip hinge for the tie bar that links it to the root of the main rotor.

Finishing of by painting and laquering to tie it all in.

I was happy with the outcome and its just what I was after.

Need to paint the flat black on the underside of the main blades and then laquer, I best then start getting it back together, though I still have to paint the sliding doors and finish off the decals when they arrive.

I'm in two minds whether to go straight in with the full scale rotor head and flybar, or to fly it more with the paddles ? If anyone has done so what was your experience in changing to the scale rotor head??

well with the new computerized fly bar systems it would a good time to go with flybarless head = ) nice blade grips, will all that hold up to the G forces?

Hi

Don't know, I will tell you when it flies.

Should be fine, the head will be spinning at around 950rpm, but tight into the head those should be fine.

Might go with a helitronix mixer, I already have the CSM180 gyro, just on pitch I think.

I will soon know !!!

WEll, Lee .. Here is a shot of my (LITTLE) Vario benzin Huey with the Semi Flybarless Rotorhead ... your using the R22 Head I think .. You would have to make these parts as I do not believe Vario makes these yet for that head. Flys nice but I had to work on the setup (Radio) for awhile till it felt nice .. very sluggish in elevator control .. had to pump that up quite a bit to make it feel comfortable ..

Hi Tim,

No its the Benzin head with the upgraded grips and 12mm main shaft. I have the semi scale flybar head that you have here, so its a case of getting it painted up and giving it a go.

So let me get this right, you needed to increase the expo around centre to make it more lively ???

Once you'd done that how did it feel ?? Pics look great.

Hi

Well blades are all balanced and cleared, mechanics are fitted so it won't be long before its painted maiden.

Been working on the controls, scratch built apart from the cyclic grip I kit bashed from another SSM part.

All switches added, just need to add the base of each control before I get the painting done.

Cheers

Hi

No picked him up on ebay, he was scratch built I think, the best way is to buy seperate parts and build them up, soke good companys ij HK sell seperates, action figure 2000 being one, do a google search.

I have afew photos at home, the detail is good depending on what you wnat to do in the end, I had to change some on mine to match the one I was modelling.

I'll post some pics tomorrow as I'm currently at work.
