Absolutely A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!! How long does it take from scratch to finsh a project of this calibre? This is really a master piece, and a pleasure to see such quality workmanship.
I stummbled across this posting while looking for info. on building a Century a109, but its just not up to these standards. Fantastic work! Is it for sale? What will it be used for?

Hi

Took two years on and off.

Not for sale just yet, possibly next year after a few shows if the right offer came in.

Be used for general flying by me, a few competitions and a flying display in the future.

Cheers for the kind comments

Good evening Mr. Heliraptor,

Thank you for the window tint suggestion, just found a site
that supplies Tamiya translucent green which looks as if it is
going to do the trick !
(Your photo angle of the green tinted light falling on the instrument panel is quite inspiring).
Very interested in the flybarless head, will you do the
stabilizing bar with the weights for the scale effect?
Right now I`m flying a Hirobo Schweizer converted to electric, nothing on the level of scale that you have achieved but it is a fun machine for me.
With both the Hirobo MRB-III three blade head, (no flybar of course)
and the original two blade head on hand I would like to convert the two blade head to a flybarless type so that I would have the option of using both. I hope that you will post detailed photos of your particular solution.
Thanks again for the suggestion on the window tint !

Hi Andrew,

Yes as shown in the images, that's the head I will be flying. Bit of a handful at the moment but I'm working on it to calm it down.

Hopefully the next two evenings will do that as I hope to fly it at the weekend in a competition.

I have flown it extensivley before final paint with a flybar head, no vices at all, but the Vario sks head is a different ball game.

Good afternoon Lee,

So if I understand correctly the two blade head with the weighted stabilizer bar is a manufactured product by Vario.
I would make the presumtion that the intention was that this head be used with the recently released/developed, [V-system?] to electronically stabilize these types of heads?
The reason for my question is that I am also trying to "calm down" my three blade Hirobo Schwiezer. Had some success with a slower headspeed and a modification of the damper rubbers which allow another degree of coning for a total of 2 degrees.
If I may ask what methods/modifications are you pursuing to enhance stability with your machine?

Hi

The head has been around for a while and I'm sure Vario recommend there gyro system.

I have just setup the new edition standard helitronix mixer and will be flight testing tomorrow evening all going well.

I will report back.

Cheers Guys,

The final part of the build is going in shortly for the next issue.

I'm currently ploughing through a much quicker project, that in essence will have only taken a few months.

Cheers for all the kind comments

Hope to meet a few of you this coming year.

Hi Lee. Been watching the thread for a while now. I am also looking foward to the second article in the mag. It will be a while being my LHS does not get it in from over there about a month later. I was going to PM or Email you with a couple of questions as I just started a Huey myself about a month ago. Not a Len Mount. Just a cheeper Hirobo. Can't afford the better stuff now. Kids, wife in grad school, ect...... Anyways, thought I'd ask them here so everyone else could benifit from the answers.

1. Do you leave the adjustment rod (forget what it's called) that goes from the blad grip to the back of the main blade on during flight? Just curious how that effects the lead/lag on the blades.

2. What main blades do you use? I am having a hard time finding blades with square tips that are not woodies. The blades that came with mine are square tipped but they are white and I want some that are black or can be painted.

3. What kind of paint did you use? I was planning on using some auto paint that I have, in fact already mixed the color I want. However, I want to do some weathering (a need that comes from my armor modeling days) and the paint I have requires the clear to go on within 24 hours of the base coat or it will peel and it will take me a couple of days to get the effects I want.

Thanks for a great thread.

Hi,

No problem at all, email or pm me if you have any questions. I'll try and answer your questions.

The tie bar from the grip to the main blade is left on at all times. I designed it as such so it did not effect the lead lag of the blade. It is basically two different sizes of alloy tube, one on each end that telescope into one another. This way it also makes it easier when you remove the blade as it just pulls out.

I used vario blades myself, another option is to buy a slightly longer set that the size you need, and cut the tip of square, then re balance after finishing vario do make a Scale blade set, not sure what size you need.

I guess any kind of main blades can be primed and painted, then just need re balancing afterwards.

For the whole heil and blades I used Tamiya AS Sprays, the little tins, coverage was excellent, its fuelproof, and very easy to use, the finish is lovely.

Mine needs weathering but I haven't tried it yet, never done that kind of thing really so need some learning so if you have any tips fire away.

Anything else you need just ask.

Thanks Lee. I already thought about cutting the tips off of some blades but was not sure how it would work. I did not know that Tamiya paint was fuel proof. Never used it, always used Testors Model Masters.

As far as weathering, it's an art by itself. Mostly acheived through airbrushing, drybrushing, and washes. My best suggestion would just to go to modeler sites or buy books on modeling thats for armor.

The books I used most are "Modeling tanks and military vehicles" and "How to build dioramas." Both are by Sheperd Paine. He was employed by Monogram to build models and dioramas for them for promotion. Not sure if they are still in production, I have had mine for about twenty years.

I'll see if I can find some sites and will PM them to you as not to clutter up this thread.
