I've been reading up on tips posted here in the past, and I've made some progress, but still have a slight tail wag. If you would be so kind as to review this video clip and provide any advice I would appreciate it. Maybe just reduce the GYRO gain a little more ?
I'm at about 70% with AVCS on (Futuba GY240). The tail servo is a Hitec HS81....

I've crunched the clip down to 2MB, so it should stream ok.

Thanks in advance !!

I have the same thing. Not real bad. Just enough to annoy me. I think I know what the problem is. I have a CSM gyro. It is an awesome gyro, but my HS- 81 can not keep up with it. I as well as yourself may need to find a faster mini servo. Also....I stiffend my tail boom as a quick R&D test. It did smooth out, but in the locked position...it still wags.

Somebody out there in heli land help us with a mini servo that is FAST!

Oh!!!! One more thing to try. Make sure your set screws on both tail rotor blades are tight. If they ar loose....you will a major wag or even a piroette or two if they are real loose!

futaba 9650 or 9602 (mini, not micro) I am running 9602 and it is solid. frankly, mounting hs56 right at the tail has proven to work better than HS81. you can use boom clamp mount for trex to do this.

Askman,
Let me ask you a question. If I start my flight and the gyro is the unlocked position, once I get the blades spinning then click into locked? My problem is, if the blades are not spinning, and it is in the locked position, the tail rotors move to the maximum position and put strain on the servo. I think this is why my last servo burned up. Is that normal? I have a CSM gyro head lock gyro.

I ordered a JRDS368 servo for the tail yesterday. It's just a little more than the futaba 9602. Hopefully the digital speed won't be a waste and it will work well. Thanks so much for helping out with advice...

We have found that the HDS 877 and HDS 577 servos do a good job. The 877 is the lighter (10g) and slightly the faster (0.11s/60 deg) off load. However, the extra torque of the 18g weight 577 probably means that it is faster in practice with the sort of tail loads involved. Both servos are rated to work off 6v with small performance improvements.

Doing the tail bellcrank extension thing and using a correspondingly longer servo arm is very worthwhile as it reduces the effective 'give' in the linkage.

BTW we don't have any commercial interest in these servos - we just use them.

Best regards

I finally put this issue to bed. I was checking the copter over and noticed that the tail servo didn't move very fast. I took it apart to replace the gears and noticed that the larger pin (for the potentiometer) was bent. I didn't think you could bend that in a crash because it's so far in the case. I swapped out the servo with another Hitec HS81, and presto ! It's tracking like a champ. WHen I was starting to learn to hover this thing, I must have banged it somehow bend that pin.

Many thanks to all who offered advice. I hope to post clips of it flying better !!
