Is there any reason, aerodynamically, that left rolls are any different from right rolls? I seem to not be able to make a crisp left roll to save my life. I complete them no problem but I usually lose a bit of altitude. The nose also "falls" a bit. I am running no mixes.

I have the same problem on the sim, so it would seem to me that it's a brain/thumb thing.

Any suggestions?

Jeff

To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

This is very funny, I just posted the same topic in the main discussion!

There is a difference in left and right rolls. It has to do with attacking and retreating rotor blades and asymetrical lift. Left rolls in FF are slower than right (the right blade is traveling faster through the air than the left causing it to have more lift), and right rolls in BF are slower than left (the left blade is traveling faster through the air than the right causing it to have more lift). This is the curse of the rotory aircraft. You have to learn to deal with it. The heli should have no pitching problems though. Like Pete said, if it is pitching it is either in your setup or in your thumbs. If it is barrel rolling, your collective timing is off.

LOL, Just trying to share all the info I gather.

They don't call me a technician for nothing ya' know.

I just recently figured this one out myself while trying to practice backwards rolls. Couldn't figure why it rolled so slow backwards and like a rocket forwards (duh).

advancing retreating blades

I believe it's the left blade (advancing blade) that is traveling faster relative to the air (for a CW rotating rotor head). The effect of that increased airflow is a pitching moment rather than a rolling moment; look at where your rotor blade pitches up when you give a back cyclic command (on the left side, not over the tail). This moment is trimmed out for level FF with forward cyclic trim.

I agree with the above discussion; that the roll being harder to the left than the right, is due to the more "unnatural" feel of pushing the stick toward the center of the Tx versus pulling it toward the side.
