e-Align T-REX 450-500-600 > Tail motor instead of tail belt:

Hey, you guys do realize that this mod can save the zoom and 3D pro!

I personally think 3D pro with extended boom with this tail motor setup would kick some T-rex ass. haha

Oh well, but seriously, 3D pro IS a lot lighter, imagine the power you'll get!!!

23 grams with a 22.7mm stator and matching endbell. It's shaft is too long, so Im gonna have to cut a little off, making it even lighter. It has a ring magnet, which I am gonna replace with neo 5x5x1mm mags, so kind of a wash there... then I just add the stock mount which depending on how many screws I use in it will add maybe 6 grams... Like I said.. taking 36 turns of 26 AWG wire out will lessen it a bit as well, so then we just have to deal with its power, but with neo mags and a few less turns, I dont think torque will be a problem... Now I just gotta make a fin... maybe I will just use piano wire tho, to keep the tail rotor out of the grass...

But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

I've got a Shogun V1 w/ belt conversion that is having a helluva time keeping my tail locked during big pitch manuveurs. I'd love to apply this concept to it, but I don't have any of the machining tools necessary to pull off this type of mod.

It'd need a smaller OD shaft for starters.

shell.. I have nothing as far as machining goes... unless you call my dremel a machining tool... My stuff looks kinda rough, but works very well... not shiny and rounded like Willies mount

hmm... this is inspiring Ozy I'll let ya guys whack at it a bit longer then see what I can do given build photos, etc. I've got a dremel and I know how to whack stuff with it. I just need to know what to whack and where.

I've got a metal tail cage for this Shogun and a couple spare plastic ones to play with. Still unsure about the shaft being as small as it is. It does look like I could get one of the smaller GWS type brushed motors mounted, like what you see with the smaller FP helis. I suspect I'd just burn it up though like what you see happen with the smaller birds.

I could also go the T-Rex tail cage route with a bunch of electrical tape to build up the boom so that it can mount. I've seen photos of that.

The idea i have is to use some of the metal mounting plate from the insides of my newly ripped apart cdrom drive. Cut it down to a workable mount that screws to an existing tail box, and run the shaft through the existing bearings. A bit of playing and it could work. take a pic of your existing tail box and I can see if I can give you a couple ideas...

I'll take a shot from the rear so you can see it better.

on that tail box, i would take off the outside half of the box, and replace it with a piece of CF or metal (from the cdrom) and fabricate a piece to match whatever motor you go with... the metal pieced box actually makes it very versatile...

Anything new?
I like the tail motor idea and want to give it a try. I got a CC Phoenix 10, found it on sale for $39.95 and thought it was a good deal. Anyone found a better lighter motor yet or is the AC-DIYMOT-2207 still the one to try?

Exactly my thoughts. How much for a kit is the next question.

That looks good. Throw in the ESC and let's call it $15 shipped priority mail to the U.S.

willy, When you did the double wind, how did you do it, both strands at once, or one with ten, then the other with ten on top of the first?? Mine seems to lack a little power, and Im looking to boost it up... I tried 11 winds, but it got hot, so my current motor is wound with 13 turns single stranded. I am actually using the motor stators and bells with new magnets out of the CDRom drive to make the motors... 22.7 mm stator....

Whilst building a new machine (computer) last night I came across a couple CDROMs here whose silly little belts have stretched and no longer provide enough torque to swing the stupid drive door open.

With that said, I've begun the rewinding process. Not much more to add at this point.

Oh, I forgot to ask, what gauge wire are you winding with??

Good deal Shell, I still havent posted the pics I promised, but I will try and get some up, to show the mount I did...

Hey Willy, I just got my AC-DIYMOT-2207 kit and it didn't come with any instructions so I printed out the 4 page Datasheet on Aircraft-Worlds web site. Your last post said you were using a 10 turn double wind for better torque and pep. Is this still the case and did you wind the stator using the Star or Delta wind method?
Thanks for any help.

BTW, I am having trouble getting the electronics synced with my Optic 6, I wanted to use the gyro gain channel, because I thought it worked just like the other channels by sending out the same signal, but I was wrong. I am going to have to use the throttle channel, but I am going to have to see how it goes without a governor on the tail ESc, cause I am using the Thunderbird 9, half the price of the phoenix 10... but no gov mode... I will be trying things out to see what I can do....
