Did you twist or braid the wires all the way down the boom?? it looks like you started coming off the P10, cause I could see straight wires causing an issue with noise...

But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

Wow that tail looks awesome and shiny!! I thought about doing this one time on my smaller helis but I didn't because I would run into C of G problems!

Anyhow I really like this idea I reckon this has scope for a HV setup if an even lower Kv motor for the tail is used. Imagine using 6s, you would would need a 500kv tail motor!

what about cdrom brushless motors,... they are out there in the same case as the shafts... and I have seen some people wind them very effectively to get good output... they are very small... they prolly need to be rewound tho, to get them off the circuit board, and the end bell needs to be played with to get it nice for just a shaft instead of the cd plate... something to look into...

But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

So, check this out...

http://homepages.enterprise.net/jayjay/cdrom_motors.htm

still havent got my park 300 back, so, Im looking into alternatives... I have already wound a motor, but have not tested it yet, I still need to work out a bearing issue, but I think these could work, be easily obtainable and be lighter than even the park 300. I am guestimating at arund 20 grams... we will see, I got the winding wire at a Radioshack and the cool thing is, the shafts are all 3mm, so there are two shafts in the drive that you get the motor from...

Nicely done! What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages now?

- Flight time?
- Yaw control (precision)?
- Yaw control (authority)?
- Maintenance?
- Balance?
- Cost?

Do you think this might become a typical upgrade?

Awesome Willy, have you noticed anything in the numbers.. the battery specifically, cause everyones biggest hurdle is the fact that they think it would lower the flight time... any thoughts?? It looks like the authority ius great, I'm pressing on with the cdrom setup until I can get the eflite back... I cant wait to get this going on mine too...

Great thread by the way. It was also an interesting role-reversal to see heliboy1023 playing the "thorn in the side" role willy usually plays. Its great to see willy playing contributor rather than stone thrower! Much better use of his brain power IMHO!

willy,

Have you seen this motor yet? It is 18 grams and costs $30 us. What was the final weight on your motor? This one is mounted on a CF shaft and may or may not work for what you are doing- but maybe?

my CDRom motor is 25grams AUW includng the long shaft... I need to find a better bell, then I can shave off another 2 or 3 grams... I tested it last night and man does that thing humm.... I have it weakly mounted to the 450x tailbox, I am getting up the nerve to buy a metal gearbox... maybe even the MFIS one to modify... but I wanna know I can do it first....

I found a site to get all my stuff for new motors... www.gobrushless.com i can get my magnets there, and possibly a 8mm stator....

see with my current setup, I would have to dremel out the outside bearing hole, to put the stator in place there, so I wouldnt be able to go back.... I'll take a few pics tonight of the plastic setup... and you can critique..

I have been following this thread and have a lot of intrest. That heli looks great willy! I would not be supprised to see a new heli using this concept to compete with the Trex. The only drawback that I see is possible issues with speed control cutouts (not to say that there are not similar drawbacks with a belt). This could definately be a future upgrade. It would be really cool to see an efficiency test between a good motor drive vs. the belt.

Keep up the great work!

Willy, how many turns did you use again?... I cant seem to find it... I have the motor in the plastic stock gearbox, what does everyone think would be the best to hold it there.. epoxy or CA.. its brass to plastic...??? Any ideas??

Whoa.... that looks awesome!!! I really like the way that looks and just bolts on... very nice job... I am gonna have to try something like that, I was wondering how I would get it to go... I still need to use the other plate for the motor mount and have the space between to the third bearing. I have a collar that holds my stator in place on the shaft and it needs a little room. I can then make a CF or metal plate for the outside of the metal tail box and still have it able to be stock again...

So, how many winds did you turn on your stator??

I wondered what that extra screw was on the back side.... nice mounting, it looks very secure... 12 wraps... hmm my latest is 16 turns, I wonder if I need to go lower... get more power out of it?? I like the fin... you think it can be under 10.. that would be very nice... Did I tell you I have the motor down to 23 grams... if I took out 4 turns times 9 hammerheads, that could cut down another gram or two...
