Vario Sky Fox - Benzin - Evolution - Xtreme > Your perception of Vario

Just wondering how Vario helis are perceived around the world. I don't know anyone else with one here in Finland, so people don't really have any reaction to mine, are they seen as of lower, equal or higher quality than the far eastern helis? I don't know the prices all you people pay for your models, but my standard Sky Fox cost me a bit less than a Raptor 60, so perhaps I am evaluating it on that basis.

Just curious!

Well, my perception in the USA is this:

Not very common. Pretty high quality. Expensive. Great for scale. I have 2 Vario's: A Kobold in a Bell47G and am Evolution-S. Aside from flying around my Evo-S (which is going into a Huey Fuse), I've never seen another Vario flying Pod & Boom. They've all been scale.

Hello,
I see no reason you can not fly 3D with your Vario, I have seen several do quite well. They are very High Quality machines, they are just do not have the normal look of the other models. They are very popular for scale and I am sure you can get your to 3d you just need to get it set up properly and get your engine to make some good power. I have 5 Varios and I love them.

I fly the Slience... pod and boom the machines are very different for the norm. ( vigor, FURY, freya, etc.)
Although I have made several modifications to mine so that it is able to fly 3d better, most of them were not neeeded.

They are the only brand to fly. I have had Schluter, Kalt , GMP and Vario and Vario is the best. They are smooth and responsive. Once you own one you'll want many more! I currently have an Evolution S, Xtreme S, Viper, Benzin Bell 47, two Benzin Dauphins (I love the Dauphin), Benzin Jet Ranger, and an Airwolf with tunnel mechanics. All my glow Varios have Rossi's, it's a perfect combo! My son if flying a Kobold that will soon be in a Alouette III fuse. They are great for scale, and are super pod & boom birds also. Fly the Skyfox with pride, you have one of the best helis around!!

I fly nothing but Vario also. Two X-TREMES with OS 60 RXs and Zim pipes and the machines will do anything any other machine will do. I am currently working on a gear change for 8.45 to 1 and will be installing a Webra 91 and Zim pipe with hopes of extreme 3D! If you buy a Vario you will not be disapointed, from scale to 3D.

Vario Experience

For anyone who wishes to fly heavy 3D, although Vario has quite a few kits that will do that, you need to look closely at the Experience. I have been testing the experience for the past 3 months since its release and all I can say is Kudos to Vario in trying to concur the 3D market as well. I have been flying Robbe and Miniature helicopters in the past but now I own 3 experiences.

I am in the process of releasing the complete review/setup of the experience on my website soon (If I can get one), but to let you all know about a few items that you will definitely like:

• Location of the fuel tank: Underneath the main mast meaning the helicopter from the beginning of the flight to the end will not need trimming and still able to see that tank in flight.
• Location of the Motor: Very easy to do maintenance on the motor. Conventional helicopters have the easy access to the servos and motor usually is setup inside the frames. My past experience, I’ve done more work on the motor then the servos.
• Clutch assembly: Ridiculously easy and efficient. No question the easiest clutch assembly on the market today. Check it out.
• Light: I’ve got mine a little over 8LB. With the OS91 and carbon tuned pipe, it is a rocket even at 8000ft elevation.
• I am working on G10 frames which will drop the weight quite a bit.
• 4 points CCPM: Although it is some what difficult to setup if you haven’t done CCPM, the precision of controls are very high. At 50% swashplate setup, I get 20degress of pitch. To do rolls and flips require very little stick movements.
• Quality and easy of assembly: Nothing short of the usual vario quality of parts. The kit can be assembled in much shorter time then any other helicopters due to its simple design. Sandwich frames with about 5 spacers with enclosed main mast, tank and back belt pulley. That’s all.

Things I found to be difficult or not to my likings was:

• Boom assembly needs to be JBweld glued. My first one I failed. Suggestion measure 10 times, cut once. It was totally my fault. However, the tail/boom assembly is solid and will last forever if completed correctly.

• No matter what helicopter you have, doing hard 3D require solid tail gear box. Vario offers in the next kits to replace the plastic gear box with the metal once.

• I want an YS91 in mine. Vario doesn’t have a conversion or clutch unit that this time but I am hoping that they will in the near future.

Flying characteristics would be hard to describe as we all have different preferences in picking our electronics, and setting up the helicopter for your own flying style. However, IMO there is little comparison to other helicopter. Precision in controls, quietness because of the belt driven trany, weight to power ration, are some of the things I was looking into a helicopter.

Hope this helps.

If I can get my Sky Fox to perform as I would like, then I may well buy an Extreme, I need to try to rationalise my helis so that I am not chasing spares from all corners of the globe! Germany is close and Vario have been wonderful to deal with. For a European, they are cheaper than most of the Far Eastern or US made helis, as well. Being able to use zero nitro fuel is also a major benefit with our prices! Just need to come to terms with that brute of as a Rossi!

I've ordered a good amount of stuff from Vario USA (air star). Service is somewhat spotty. Most of the stuff I've ordered directly over the net has arrived in a timely fashion and w/o a problem. Occasionaly I've had a part missing.

If you can speak directly with Josef about a problem, I think he genuinely wants to make you happy but his follow through leaves something to be desired at times. I once sent him back an OS engine I was having a problem with, and they ended up shipping it back to someone else across the country.

The alternatives are Moore Vario or Vario East. They all have to get thier stuff thru Josef, but they may be more likely to apply better customer service quality conrol...

Most, if not all problems with supplies from the west coast can be traced back to Germany. Everything is a cottage industry over there, and manufacturing times we take for granted over here, do not happen over there. To have a new simple part machined in Germany for Vario usually takes a couple of weeks, as opposed to a couple of days over here. I really have not had many issues with what they have kept in stock, as Germany usually backorders more than they order. Ed, Vario East, or V-East as it is known now only does Graupner.

I placed an order on Moore Vario and was told that the catalogs were going to have to wait several months at least because they arent in English. Go figure I see nothing has changed yet............sigh........too bad because it is a good product. Im trying REAL hard to keep an open mind but it seems everything that I specificly order is always out of stock or backordered what gives? How come all you other guys say no prob and always get it fast? Is it just the fuses that arent in stock or the pod/boomers as well? We are inching closer to whats realling going on and I want to know why im still having to wait again.

Joe,
"Cottage industry"? Dont germans have to go to work and pay bills too? If not maybe Ill move there myself.......... Maybe they are all rich and just do it for the fun of it once in a while since they dont do it every day sorta a hobby right? I saw pics of the factory in an old issue of Rotary mag showing people assembling yes it looked very laid back...........

Most of the small business over there are run right out of the homes. In Germany, they have 36 Bank holidays, and 5 weeks vacation. With that in mind, they hardly ever work a full week. We recently had a hard time getting rotor blades because the guy who makes them at home, was affected by the recent floods they had over there, and the molds were washed away with his house.
The new catalogs have been here for quite some time now, and they are in English. How long ago was your call to Moore? It had to be some time ago.
