I had something that sounded really similar with an X-Spec I used to own. It made this really terible vibration/sound at low RPM and at idle. I couldn't find anything wrong. Someone told me to check the bearing in the motor (a fairly new YS .91). It was shot. I had it replaced and the problem was solved. I have since had another YS .91 that had a bad rear bearing early on, so I think it is pretty common. I replaced it with a Boca ceramic and haven't had any problems since. It isn't hard at all to change the bearings.

It's probably worth checking if you haven't found anything else wrong.

I love the YS engines, but I just expect to replace the bearings early on.

Yesterday I swapped out the entire Evo main mast/ head assembly with the one in my standard Freya and it made a very noticeable improvement. Since I've already replaced the spindle, fly-bar, and main shaft, I'm going to change the head block and see what happens. Is there anything between the swash and head button that could be assembled incorrectly that could cause a vibration?

At an idle, it "hums" so bad it is hard to get a screwdriver in slot to adjust the low speed needle. The screwdriver dances all over the place. I really hate to take it out (again) and send it back to YS, just to be told there is nothing wrong with it.

You are complaining about low end engine vibration and you are changing out main shaft bearings??? Obviously it is an engine related problem. You can change the bearings very easily you don't need to send the engine back to YS. At least that is where I would start.

Solar, the engine does hum but I've been told that is typical of a YS 91. I don't know, this is my first 90 size heli. If you were in my shoes, you'd understand that it's not that obvious. All I was trying to do by swapping the head assemblies is isolate the problem before I go buying a bunch of parts that may or may not fix the problem. I also swapped entire tail boom assemblies, which made no difference at all.

I think you've been told about the hum being typical, is because most YS 91s needed a rear bearing. If the EVO has not been dorked I doubt the problem is in the mechanics. Is the clutch dialed in to specs? My money is on rear bearing.

Feel free to give me a shout at 732 225 2100 ext 230.

If need be, you can send the motor here to be looked at and dialed in if necessary.

Is the tank foaming a lot?

Before you go buying a bunch of new parts, give me a shout or email me your number at jeff@modelrectifier.com.

I am here to help you figure this out.

Jeff

Bamm!!! Now thats what everyone is always talking about.. Great customer service, Kudos Jeff.

BTW this is not a paid advertisement. I do not even own a single Hirobo product. Just very impressed with his "I am here for you" attitude time and time again!

It's only typical if it has a bad bearing or is badly out of tune. It should run like a sewing machine if everything is OK.

Changing out the rear bearing with a stock one will cost you less than $20 and a little bit of time. Its simple to do and if you have 4 gallons on that YS its prob about time for one regaurdless.

I'll probably end up changing the bearing but I'm going to give Jeff a call first. About a year ago he helped me with a problem I had with an Evo 50.

I've changed bearings in some OS engines without any trouble. Obviously there is a little more to the YS but I shouldn't have any trouble.

mrNoodles, I wish that was an option. The nearest YS owner I've been able to find is at least two hours away, maybe further. I spoke with Jeff Green today and he gave me a couple things to try but the weather isn't being very helpful. As soon as I get a chance to try his suggestions I'm going to call him back with the results. He is confident we will find the problem.(I am, too)

How far away from Indianapolis are you? We have a few guys running the YS91 on the Evo here including myself.

imo a 2 hr drive to spend some time with other heli addicts and the first hand help in person seems like its worth the tank of gas and time considering start buying parts might be well over what you would spend in gas

crashes sponsored by VISA, MASTERCARD, and AMEX.. just like your heli.. never leave home without it
