Speed - Performance - Drag Race > What's a typical Drag Race set up?

OK, what are you guys running in those drag machines?

What's the best way to get that head speed up and do the blast off launch? Is a governor in use or is it all idle ups?

One of my flying mates has a Raptor 50 set up for the drags. I recall his pitch was set from -5 to +14 or 15, and he was running an OS50 with a boat tuned pipe (the long skinny type of pipe), on about 45% nitro. He was running the stock 30 gearing in the raptor instead of the 50. This allows the 50 to get revving a little higher than normal. This thing screams. Hope any of that helps.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Different launch techniques

There are basically two ways to launch the heli.

Last year's technique was to gear the machine to obtain a head speed of 2100 RPM (what I consider the safe max number) at the peak hp rpm of your engine.

I set up Idle up 1 for most races with the throttle setting of about 65%.

If I got beat in the first run (which happened at IRCHA against Ron Lund) then I used 100% throttle for the next two launches.

I used a 10:1 gear ratio which kept the head speed under control especially when coupled with a V-Tech pipe.

Next year, I will be running a Governor on everything for a couple of reasons.

1) Head speed will be the same all the time for ALL launches
2) Don't have to worry about over-speeding the rotor disc.

I think that it's Natescape that has a calculator on how much force is applied to blade bolts at different RPMS, there is a lot especially at high RPMS.

JCadwell, Furious Raptor,,, if you guys have a lot of power with a good tuned pipe and 45% fuel, how about running a larger 60 size head ??

A 60 sized head is an excellent way to setup a smaller machine. It will take the higher stresses much better because the smaller mass from the 30-50 size blades.
The higher gearing from the R30 seems to be popular on the R50.
If you use a tuned pipe, make sure is tuned for the RPM you intend to make power. Just slaping one in does not guarantee you will make more power. Beware, when you get near optimun lenght, they get real picky and hard to needle. I don't think Muscle pipes may not be the best for racing , since they are made to make best power at a practical RPM better suited for aerobatics. I am not a Muscle Pipe expert, and that is just my observation.
Be willing to invest in a modified engine if you realy want to be competitive. That setup may also require even higher gearing.
Practice, practice, practice the launch for racing. It plays a big part in the equation.
Good luck
