e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Lipo battery deteriation time....?

Well we have talked about storage, charging and many other things. One thing I do not know about and have not been able to find a firm answer on is the natural lipo deteriation. Lets say you have a Lipo that gets used only maybe 3-5 times a month, after a year will it go bad, and would there be a natural aging to this battery? OR is it strictly come down to how many cycles and the months or years on the battery hold no relavance? I just got to thinking about this the other night and would be nice to know as I do have some batteries I feel do not get allot of use and are coming of age. Hmmmm

First.. Lipos are always deteriating.

If you store them for weeks and months on end, DO NOT store them fully charge as this makes then deteriate even fast.

some lipo last longer then others it depends on the company making them and how you use them.

if you discharge them past 80% then you will have a shorten lipo life.

many things have been written, just do a search on the web.

I will also say that there are alot of lipo myths out there...

This is the problem, it is hard to find "facts".

Take a look at

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm

It seems that storing at high temperatures when fully charged is the worst thing to do. I now keep mine in the fridge.

In the fridge??? You're kidding? LOL. OK so fair enough on the warm storage full thing, but does putting them in the fridge actually make them last longer or is better for the batteries? I read storing in a cool area is ok, but I did not read that actually storing them in a cold area ie: fridge was good. Seems weird as I know when I goto fly in winter in the 30-40 degree F mark the batteries are really lathargic and I get them warm in truck before flying to get some decent power out of them. Do you gradually warm them when pulling out of fridge and also what kind of voltage do your fridge stored batteries have in them when you put them in there?

LiPos store better in cold temperatures, but in use they need to be warm.

To be honest, I don't know whether keeping them in the fridge really helps, but almost all chemical reactions are slowed down by low temperatures, so it seems to make sense that deterioration of batteries (I read somewhere that the Lithium oxidises) will be slowed this way. I take 'em out and let them warm up before charging. My oldest Lipos that have been stored this way, are the Raptor ones that are about 13 months old and still seem good as new.
